INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Happy International Women's Day:  I know, I have been Missing in Action again.

Oops....

Let's just catch up on things at the International Headquarters of the Red Cardinal Blog:

Summer flowers blooming...

Fabulous Bird cushion from No. 2 son and his wife...

More Summer flowers...

I made these for my tiny granddaughter, from a small piece of vintage fabric from my stash.   Never throw good fabric away...

We went to the Queensland Symphony concert to see Beethoven's Choral Symphony 'Ode to Joy' - wonderful, inspiring, as always...

I have been busy at the art gallery - GoMA has a great new exhibition entitled 'Air'.
How do you make an artwork about something that is invisible?
Many artists have done just that, and it is a very imaginative show.

Here's a glimpse:

Carlos Amorales 'Black Cloud' 2007-2018
Amorales draws our attention to the escalating devastation of invertebrate populations due to climate change.  The butterflies blackened wings are a dire portent of things to come.

Thomas Saraceno 'Drift: A cosmic web of thermodynamic rhythms' 2022.
Artist and environmentalist Saraceno's sculptures are experimental models, charting a path towards sustainable human flight technologies.
The mirrored section would reflect the sun's radiation providing solar energy.  That is little me reflected in the centre.

Mona Hatoum 'Hot Spot' 2006.  The earth shown burning in orange/red neon.

Jemima Wyman 'Plume 20' 2022.  A giant collage of hundreds of separate clouds of smoke, cut from images of uprisings, civil protests and wars.

Jamie North 'Portal' 2022.  Columns composed of cast concrete with aggregates including industrial remains, alongside nature's regeneration process.  The plants are indigenous to Brisbane, including rusty fig and elkhorn fern and are growing throughout the exhibition.  Our air depends on plant life: they take in carbon dioxide, and put out life-giving oxygen, a reciprocal exchange of gases.

Take care of the planet.

  1. Oh my goodness, such a wealth of pretties on today's blog, Trish! They are so exquisite and cheerful. A lovely blend of art and nature! I can see your tiny granddaughter in her bottoms with the baby chicks. I'm eager for spring to begin and to see flowers bloom here too!

    1. Glad you enjoyed the flowers and art Debra. Our little miss looks really cute in her Granny-made bottoms; she is like a little doll. Hope to see the flowers blooming in NYC some day soon.

  3. Love all of this so much Trish! I live through your flowers right now as I stare at snowbanks. Lol The artwork and exhibits are amazing! I love how we all see things through different lenses and some folks are so very creative at expressing it. Amen on taking care of this precious earth of ours. Nice to have you back for visits. 😊 Blessings. xo

    1. You are having a big white-out over there - hope there are a few red cardinals flying about to contrast with all that snow. You touch on a great point: different perspectives are so important, and bring out wonderful art from creative types. Yesterday I attended a lecture at the gallery from a young woman who make art which is a crossover between fashion and sculpture. Hope to get some pics soon. Blessings back to you too. xo

  4. Dearest Patricia,
    LOVE your summer flowers!
And what a heavenly Queensland Symphony concert you attended.
You are very creative and intelligent for saving good fabric.
My 15+ days past have been in excruciating pain due to being T–boned by a lady with her car at a speed of 35 mi. She hit my left leg and E–bike and threw me off onto the Hwy—right in front of husband Pieter who followed me...
    Did post an update...
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Those butterflies are very popular, and it is quite something to stand in that room with them. People like to take selfies of them too :)

  6. What sweet little bloomers you made for your granddaughter! And the flowers are gorgeous - what is the first pink flower, the one just above the rose at the top?

The art exhibition really portrays how creatively people think.

    1. Lorrie, that is a leptospermum bush, a native Australian plant. It flowers for most of the year and works well mixed in with other big blooms like roses. Those little bloomers make me smile: they just suit our little sweet girl so well.

  9. Your pink roses are gorgeous, Patricia. The art work is interesting. It's unusual that the butterfly wings are all black. The symphony sounds wonderful. Those are the cutest little vintage bloomers you made for your granddaughter. I like your bunny too. I have a glass table that is similar to that. While it is Summer there, we are buried in snow here. Happy International Women's Day. And here's to a lovely woman spreading joy and peace at the Red Cardinal blog. : )

    1. Hi Sheri, so many people are buried in the snow these days! My daughter cannot open her back door - amazing. I love that you have a similar glass table - I bought mine from a neighbour who was moving and it is a sweet little piece, perfect for the bunny. Thank you for your good wishes, and joy and peace back to you.
