I love Oscars Day..
The best movies, the fashion, the tears, the smiles...
We have seen some of the nominated films, and look forward to finding the others, perhaps on Netflix or on a plane...
And as always, the Red Cardinal blog would like to mention our Australian ladies:
Best actress nominee Cate Blanchett, elegant as always, in electric blue and navy by Louis Vuitton.
Presenter, and previous Oscar winner, Nicole Kidman in a slinky black, embellished gown by Armani Prive.
How do they stay so Slim in their 50s?!?
And on to my favourite looks of the night:
I like the clever bow-drape and fuchsia colour of this number on Elizabeth Wagmeister..
Halle Berry, always a fashion star, in delicate mint..
This orange skirt is stunning, expertly draped and fitted - Janelle Monae
Best in Black: Danai Gurira
A big Wow factor in Angela Bassett's purple gown. Beautiful draping and gorgeous fabric.
I always love a yellow gown on the red carpet. Ruth E Carter is stunning in this formal gown with long sleeves and a train - with a pretty fuchsia lining peeking out.
My best of the night!
Do you watch the Oscars?
Which gowns appealed to you?
I'd love to know...
Happy viewing

Dearest Patricia,
ReplyDeleteWell, having formally studied fashion, the Oscars is not my thing for looking at elegance and fabulous fit.
Guess in general we lost most of the old days as most couture labels have switched owners.
But NO, I've absolutely no interest in the Oscars nor in such fake face movie stars and in their movies...
Both of us are quite illiterate in that area and we just don't care in supporting the world wide brainwashed hype.
We appreciate good movies about high morals, nature and history.
Hugs,
Mariette
It is all very much show-business and theatrics, and totally agree regarding fit and couture. I studied Fashion History as part of my Arts Degree and loved it, and learnt to sew my own suits, coats and ballgowns back in the 1960s from Vogue Couturier patterns - sadly these days they are very inferior to what we bought back in the day. We rarely go out to the movies, particularly in the pandemic, and only to the Art House cinema. I refuse to go to the Multiplex places.
DeleteCate Blanchett wearing a Louis Vuitton gown is by far my favorite. Seeing ellegant, classy chic without reaching for a soft porn statement is refreshing to see. Angela Bassett wearing Moshino is also stuning. Overall, so many full gowns upped the Hollywood vibe. This year only about 4+ that I saw are wish they wore something else... A dress that looks like it's falling off, one needs to be pruned, and a few of ran out of thread to finish the neckline.
ReplyDeleteThe men, however, from what I saw, look dashing.
The soft porn statements are awful, and I ignore those. I would like to wear Cate's outfit, I think the top is beautiful. So true about the ones which look unfinished and hardly wearable. The men are certainly taking an interest in more adventurous fashion.
DeleteWe watched the Oscars too! I thought that many of the acceptance speeches were quite emotional. Nicole Kidman’s dress was very elegant and probably my favourite.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun to see all the gorgeous diamond jewelry too!!!
We need to catch up on some of the films that won as we only saw a handful.

Yes, there were emotional moments. John Travolta remembering Olivia Newton John affected me; she was raised in Australia and we loved her. Nicole has quite a history of stunning choices at the Oscars.
DeleteGreat choices, Trish! Although I didn't select it on my blog, I loved the Janelle Monae dress too — as different and yet still stylish and everything adequately covered. Danai Gurira's black gown is so glamorous! I powder blue of Halle's dress also.
ReplyDelete'Everything adequately covered' is absolutely my criteria too, Debbie. I have no time for the thigh high leg reveal version of many beautiful gowns. Liked your choices on you blog too. Always fun to do.
DeleteHi Trish dear. First, just a heads up, that is not Halle Berry, it's a singer named Halle Bailey.
ReplyDeleteMy feelings about the movie business, Oscars etc. are somewhat like Mariette's. Never watch any presentation/awards shows because they are such false people, way overpaid and so extravagant in their lifestyles (just like sports celebrities and politicians). As this post is mostly about fashion (?) I will say out of all the gowns you have shown I would choose Cate's as the most elegant.
I don't even know who won what yet - other than Charlie Macksey winning the animated movie award for his fantastic book, 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse' - I've been praying he'd win as that is such an endearing story/film about
what's truly important in life. Charlie is a true 'star'.
Hugs - Mary
Now that is tricky, dear Mary. Two Halles! They fooled me. You make a good point, and the Oscars is the only award show I still watch, just to keep up to date with the latest films, and for a bit of fun with the fashion. I would love to see 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse'. It was the first I have heard of it, and it looked like something to share with our grandchildren. I will look for it. xx
DeleteWe're cut from the same cloth dear Trish! I love the Oscars and fashions too. I did watch last night and loved the comeback story of most of the big winners! I loved the angelic look of Michelle Williams and Michelle Yeoh in white. Your Aussie ladies were statuesque visions- totally agree there. And Hailey Baily's color and Angela Basset's were absolute stunners!
ReplyDeleteDear Carrie, I too love the angelic look of those ladies, very ladylike and no need to show more than they should. I do love a bit of bright colour too, hence the purple and the yellow. All over until next year now :)
DeleteHello Trish,
ReplyDeleteWhile I enjoy seeing who wore what at these gala events, I am never interested enough to watch the actual presentations. But I thank you for putting up posts like this for me to appreciate the best ones. Cate Blanchet looked very elegant in her outfit, and I also liked the Allison Williams long train. It would be lovely to swan around in something like that for an evening. I couldn't really see the rest of her dress, and will look it up on line. Covered up is much more alluring than letting it all out to the open air, in my opinion.
Hello Lorrie, I must admit I record the Oscars, then watch it later in the day and fast forward through all the boring bits as well as the ads. Then I find the dresses online. It would be lovely to swan around in a pink train, I think so too. You put it so well, covered up is more alluring, and I dislike the displays of the body in what should be formal evening attire.
DeleteYes, I watch the Oscars, but mostly for the fashions. Nicole Kidman is a favorite, and always looks elegant and in style. I like the fuchsia dress also. I don't have cable right now, and all the movies I watch are usually on Netflix, so I enjoyed seeing the dresses you shared today, and I always appreciate your Oscar posts, Patricia. : )
ReplyDelete~Sheri
Hi Sheri, watching the fashions is the most fun about the Oscar's. I admit to fast forward my recording through quite a lot of it! Fuchsia is one of my favourite colours. Glad you enjoyed Sheri.
DeleteSo happy you did this post showing the beautiful gowns! The young woman whose man sounds a lot like Halle Berry, she will be the voice for Ariel in the new version of The Little Mermaid. I think that's right. I'm old and get mixed up. I just love pretty gowns, can't remember facts or names! LOL!!
ReplyDeleteName not man!!
