REALITY, FANTASY, AND A DUCK REPORT

Hello from Decoy Duck..
Just an update on the duck I brought back from Canada last May.
We launched him into the pool, with the help of the Twins and Little Miss One, and there he has sailed ever since.
Not Summer storms, gale force winds, nor passing wildlife have disturbed our Decoy Duck from life in the Red Cardinal swimming pool.

I have to admit I am surprised he is still there....

Australians were thrilled this week when 'our Mary' became Queen of Denmark, with a simple proclamation in a simple white dress of impeccable elegance...

and rubies!

Here she is with husband King Frederick X and they do look happy, and perhaps relieved that their 'time' has come..

There was a carriage ride back to the Palace, naturally..

after their family joined them on the balcony.

Next morning they went to Parliament House for another Proclamation, Queen Mary wearing a regulation large, feathered, Queen hat, and walking through lightly falling snow...

How utterly fairy tale this all is.....

It seems timely to give you another look at this carriage.
'Mother-load', by artist Timothy Horn, is made of crystalised rock sugar, plywood and steel.
It is a half-sized rendering of an ornate sedan chair, as popular among 18th century Neapolitan elite.
The work references a 'rags to riches' tale of Alma de Bretteville Spreckels who rose from humble beginnings to become a renowned North American art collector, philanthropist and socialite through marriage to a sugar baron, Adolph Spreckels.
It is possible the term 'sugar daddy' may have originated here..

'Mother-load' is inspired by Alma's antique coach, and presents an impossible fantasy of wealth and opulence, as seen in many fairy tales, including Cinderella.

And just to round things off, here are a couple of Queen gowns:

Costumes worn by Julia Roberts as Queen Clementianna in the film Mirror Mirror, 2012.  (Tarsem Singh (director), Eiko Ishioka (designer), Carelli Costumes.

These and many other exciting pieces can be seen in 'Fairy Tales in Art and Film', currenting on exhibition at QAGoMA, Brisbane..

  1. Congratulations to Frederick X and Queen Mary. I also see the retiring Queen in a shot. Denmark's royals seem so sensible in how they transfer power. I hope Margrethe II enjoys much good health and some creative pursuits in her retirement.

Trish, I love the window photo of decoy duck! Your photos are much clearer and better than the ones I take with a smart phone!

    1. Well spotted Debra. The retiring Queen is still on the scene, and probably enjoys watching her son take over. Margrethe is an artist of some renown, so I imagine she will really immerse herself in her passion. Decoy duck sends good wishes!

And wow on those carriages and gowns. I don't know how Julia could even walk around in something like that! Lol

    1. Queen of Denmark sure impresses we Aussies! We are enjoying every minute of Mary's fairy tale ending. We only watched Mirror Mirror on TV recently as I prepare my tours of the exhibition and those dresses on Julia were quite amusing, and very over the top. I will pop over to your blog asap. Blessings. xo

  3. That stage coach is something else! I've seen the movie Mirror Mirror. Nothing like a Julia Roberts movie. The gown she wore was grand.

Your duck in the pool is so charming. Looks just like a mallard duck. What a sweet decoy.

I hope the new year is being good to you, Patricia.

    1. Hi Sheri, I also found Mirror Mirror a surprising new style for Julia Roberts. She was funny and over the top. The duck is happily floating around, despite the storms and humidity we are having this Summer. Have a great week!

  5. I love your decoy duck, Trish! But does he have a purpose, or is he just for fun? Congratulations on 'your Mary' becoming queen of Denmark. She and Frederik certainly make a handsome couple and they do indeed look very happy. What a lovely wedding!

    1. The duck served his purpose in Canada, used by hunters to attract live ducks during hunting season. Then he ended up in a museum - and I bought him during a yard sale they had to clear some of their relics! In our pool, he is there for fun, because I like ducks, and I love the fact he startles neighbours and other visitors.
