Happy New Year, dear Readers..
Today I visited our Gallery of Modern Art, where I volunteer as a tour guide on a regular basis.
The Summer Blockbuster exhibition this year is 'Fairytales: in Art and Film'. There were hundreds of excited children there enjoying a variety of contemporary artworks which engage with Fairytale themes, as well as a great collection of costumes and props from various Hollywood films, both old and recent.

All the familiar tropes are there, and there is plenty for adults to contemplate as well.
Fairytales do come true, sometimes:
This week Australians are excited to hear that our own Princess Mary, Australian wife of Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark, will become his Queen when Fred (as we like to call him) ascends to the throne on the abdication of his mother, 83 year old Queen Margrethe II.
This will happen on January 14.
Here they are this week stepping out on New Year's Eve...
and at Christmas, on their way to church...
The royal couple met in Sydney, at the 2000 Olympics, and romance began. After a year or so, Mary moved to Denmark (note, the home of Fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen) and discreetly began to learn to speak the difficult Danish language.
They married in 2004, in a Fairytale wedding:
and over the next few years produced four perfect children, including a cute pair of twins..
By all accounts, Mary has never put a foot wrong. The Danish people have come to love and admire their Aussie Princess, and she works on many humanitarian platforms.
And my goodness, she keeps herself slim...
Her fashion sense is chic, elegant and refined.
We like to think Fred, I mean His Royal Highness, is lucky to have her...

Princess Mary will make a really beautiful Queen of Denmark on the 14th January. I understand that there will be a public proclamation in Christiansborg Palace, Copenhagen on that day.

ReplyDeleteWelcome back Carrie. It is a surprising but fascinating topic for an art exhibition. Who knew that fairytales started as adult conversations about how to navigate the pitfalls of life? We can't wait to see our new Queen Mary ascend the throne. Have a great year!

Princess Mary seems to be a real asset to Denmark, and we are very proud of her. Other European royalty gets almost no press coverage here, but everything about Mary is well and truly explored. I had to re-read a few old tales, and my goodness the originals are quite gruesome sometimes!

I agree that the soon-to-be next King of Denmark was lucky to find Mary who seems so sensible and carries herself so well. As fortunate as royalty is with so many opportunities, it is a challenging job to always be in the public eye and not put a foot wrong. I wish the royal couple a long, happy marriage so they can carry out their duties and do a lot of good in their new positions! Queen Mary has a lovely ring to it.
ReplyDeleteQueen Mary does sound special - and reminds me a bit of our late Queen's grandmother, Queen Mary the wife of King George V, whom I am sure you know from your excellent research. They look happy together after twenty years, so I too hope they continue to enjoy their new lives as monarchs. Mary is a clever girl with a law degree and other expertise to bring to the task.
DeleteI've always admired Princess Mary - she and Britain's Kate seem to have a lot in common. Imagine, some day they will both be strong and beautiful queens of their respective countries.

Mary and Kate do have somewhat parallel lives, including a long period as Queens in Waiting. I too am hoping for some TV coverage, although with no actual Coronation, there won't be much to see! However there are reports of a banquet to be held in the evening, so perhaps we will see something of that. Thanks for popping by dear Mary.
