ST PATRICK'S DAY

Happy Saint Patrick's Day, dear Reader...

I like to acknowledge my Patron Saint, and wore green today for a coffee treat of green spinach scones at a nearby Patisserie...

Here are a few snaps from our visit to Ireland in 2016 on the occasion of our son's wedding to his Irish lass..

A mural at Wicklow, featuring St Patrick

Seen on my daily walk by the recently flooded creek..

Duchess Kate the Great, wearing glorious sapphire blue at the Commonwealth Day service..

A future Queen, looking stunning..

Two weeks after the devastating flood in Brisbane, our neighbourhood still bears many signs of the inundation....

Now removed, there were large piles of household goods destroyed by floodwaters.  About eight houses along the road at the bottom of our hill were seriously flooded...

This fence around a large horse paddock was only recently build, and now flattened by the strength of the rushing water...

as were the guard rails on several bridges over our winding creek...

and this flattened road sign..

At the Red Cardinal nest, we got quite a shock when water sprang up under our house, and we still have fans running to dry out the space so waterproofing and minor drainage repairs can proceed.

In fact, the entire hill in our area is still weeping water, which heads down towards the creek, despite there being minimal rain for over a week.

We have rented off-site storage and moved our business files there.  This will allow better circulation in the affected area and ensure the files are safe.

Sadly, the war in Ukraine goes on.  Refugees have begun to arrive in Brisbane.

Blessed St Patrick, pray for the Ukrainian people.

Be safe and well

  1. Dearest Patricia,
Sure, you do really celebrate Saint Patrick's Day!
So glad to see that you have been in Ireland, covering our footsteps form years before.
Both of us have given seminars for mushroom growers all over the island.
Impressive to see those sights where you've also been.
Sad aftermath of any flood and the powers of raging waters cannot be underestimated.
    Quite some cleanup to do.
But far worse is life for so many of the 44,000,000 people in the Ukraine.
We are in daily contact with one of our mushroom friends/colleagues. Heartbreaking!
    Hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Hello Mariette, I grew up in an area settled by Irish people, and have Irish ancestry so always take an interest in Saint Patrick. Yes, far worse in Ukraine than what is happening here, and we are watching the news each day. Their population is much bigger than Australia, and all those people are under attack. Horrible indeed.

    1. Hi Michelle, I do enjoy going over the Irish photos now and then. Happy memories of the Emerald Isle. It does seem to be taking a long time for the clean up, so much mess all over the city. Combined with Covid concerns, our city has a lot going on! xx

  3. What a terrible time you have had Patricia dealing with the aftermath of the heavy rains but it is very sensible to have the basement waterproofed as a protection against further flooding.
There seems to be just a tiny glimmer of light on the Ukrainian front - it is important that talks continue. The fortitude and commitment of the Ukrainian men and women appears to have taken Putin and his henchmen completely by surprise to his so called defensive mission.

    1. We know we would have dealt with the flood issues much better when we were younger and more energetic! It all seems quite difficult and has us considering our future plans (which is not such a bad thing). Perhaps we should live closer to family. A glimmer of light from Ukraine is very good, and I was watching vision of the talks between the two countries. I do hope they can reach some sort of plan for a ceasefire. It is interesting that Putin did not expect such a reaction, but this is the age of the internet, and the world watches.

  4. Happy St. Patrick's Day, Patricia! Your photos of Ireland show such beauty. I'd love to visit there one day. Flood damage can take such a long time to repair. I hope the sealing of your basement is effective from here on in.
I am alternately sad and furious when I think about Ukraine. I pray for her brave, brave people, and hope that that nasty man will go away.

    1. Thank you Lorrie. Ireland is very pretty, and deserves the title Emerald Isle. I loved the history too. There was originally a seal where the water was going, but it has worn away over the years. We never knew there was a possibility of water in there! I am wondering just how long it will take to dry out. I too pray for the people of Ukraine, under such shocking attacks. With instant news these days, we see daily vision of it. May goodness prevail.

  5. Happy St Patrick's Day and how lovely to see a photo of you in true Irish green, Patricia. I am so sorry there has been so much flood damage. My heart goes out to all those who have lost their homes and property. Awful, and you too have had damage. May you have a good period of dry weather to redress the situation. Kate does indeed look lovely, but I think she has got too thin. There's nothing of her. The news from Ukraine is awful. I am so sorry for the people. I'm sure they will be well received wherever they go, although many European countries are still struggling with finding homes for the previous wave of refugees from Syria. My daughter teaches a group of them and she tells me many are still in tented camps, even here in the Netherlands. I feel so very sorry for them. It's not much of a life, even though they are safe.

    1. I love my green top, which is good for Christmas too :)
I agree re Kate, she has become a little too thin lately. Perhaps they are under stress, or she exercises too much. So sad for Ukraine, as her people leave for other places. And the poor people who are stuck there in such danger. That is interesting about the Syrian refugees, still in tents. What a sad life for them. I am hoping Australia will take in a lot of Ukrainian people, many of whom have relatives already here. But of course, mainly I hope they get their country back.

  6. What a lovely photo of you and your husband, Patricia. So nice to go out for some spinach scones and coffee. That sounds interesting. My friend introduced me to scones years ago, and I actually prefer them to cakes. A wonderful photo of St. Patrick. Kate looks lovely in her blue outfit. This is actually one of my favorite colors to wear in fashion. I'm sorry that the floods did much damage to your area. It will take time to rebuild again. I love your cute little yellow bunny.

Happy St. Patrick's Day. Thanks you for sharing the pictures from Ireland. They're beautiful, and everything looks so green there. My kids are all part Irish on their father's side, so I pretend to be Irish that day also, and I wore GREEN today. ; )

    1. Thank you Sheri. I try to avoid sugar, so the spinach treat was just the thing for our little excursion. I love that shade of blue too, it is very striking on a brunette. Ireland is so Green, I could hardly believe it. We have Irish on both sides of the family, so were delighted our son married an Irish girl, and their little twin boys look very Irish to me. Glad you also wore GREEN today.

  7. I'm glad you had a blessed St. Paddy's day Trish. But so sorry that there is lingering damage from the devastation of all of the flooding. And continuing to pray for Ukraine as well. My heart goes out to them all.
Blessings on your weekend ahead. xo

    1. Hi Carrie, it takes a while for a city to recover from floods. It will probably be a year before Brisbane looks back to normal. We are praying for the peace talks in Ukraine to achieve a ceasefire. Those poor people! Blessings to you xo
