SEASONAL NEWS

Hello

While I was not looking, Summer suddenly arrived:

up came our scarlet Hippeastrums, aka Amaryllis in some parts..

the purple of the Jacarandas has spread across the city...

and the Agapanthus are flowering in the Red Cardinal garden.

The change of seasons also saw the Royal Family out and about.
Red is key this year:

I thought Camilla looked very smart at the opening of the Welsh Parliament.
I wish I knew her dressmaker - her clothes are beautifully tailored..

Catherine dazzled in red to give a keynote speech at Action on Addiction, one of her patronages.

A Ralph Lauren sweater was paired with a pleated skirt by Christopher Kane.
What a stunning combination...

How are you all?
I had a relatively common surgical operation, and am taking recuperation slowly, as suggested by my doctor..

Fatigue is the enemy...

Our State of Queensland has been blessedly, largely Covid free, since the Pandemic began.   This has been achieved by isolation, a management strategy which goes back into history.  I have read about methods to contain the spread of Bubonic Plague in the Middle Ages, and really, it was much the same then.

However, because Covid has been 'somewhere else', and vaccine supplies sparse for much of this year, many of us have not completed vaccination.
Now it is catch-up time, as our Government will open the borders just before Christmas, and basically we will 'learn to live with Covid'.

At the moment our state is 56% fully vaccinated.  I will have my second shot next week.  The experts are pushing towards 80% vaccination before Christmas which will be difficult given our large State, and relatively small and decentralised population.  Fingers crossed everybody can get to a vaccination centre and get the jab.

And maybe, just maybe, we will eventually be able to see our daughter and grandchildren in Canada once more.

They are into hiking these days, and are out exploring in the fresh Autumn air..

Take care and be safe

  1. Your grandsons in Canada have grown so much, and I can understand that you would love to be able to see them again.
I keep peeping at my Amaryllis to see if they are sending up any new stems with buds in time for Christmas, but no luck so far.
Three weeks ago I had my third booster and flu jab together - one in each arm. I think that we have all now got to learn to live with Covid into the far distant future.

    1. Red flowers for Christmas, I hope they bloom for you.
I am so impressed you already have booster shots. I asked my GP yesterday and they do not even know what or when boosters will become available. It has been a sorry delay but hopefully we will get through in the end.

  2. Happy almost summer season! The blooming flowers are so lovely! And feels so strange as I'm watching the leaves fly off of the trees in our blustery weather. Lol
The red in the royal family is stunning! Both ladies looked amazing.
Prayers for as many vaccinations there as possible! We're still not nearly where we should be as a country, but not because folks can't get it. Which is so sad to me...and frustrating. I want you to get to see those grandkiddos too!!
Stay safe and healthy, too, Trish. And enjoy the lovely weather if it's not too hot. 😊 xo

    1. So far, it is not too hot, which means it is really very nice here this week. The Summer thunderstorms are around, which I do not mind as long as they are not destructive. So sad re the vaccination refusers. We have them here too! Whether they can get to 90% remains to be seen, and yes, it is very frustrating. Thinking of you in the Autumn colour palette! xx

  3. Nature is so beautiful! I'll be thinking of your part of the woods, Trish, and hope everybody gets vaccinated to meet the governments projections.

We are still experiencing the personal choice push backs here the USA. I find the numbers of opposition so hard to believe since we are a country used to mandatory vaccines to start grade school. Vaccines and having to get them for the public good, as well as, your own, is nothing new. So I don't know where these people won't be vaccinated have been hiding. Still our numbers of COVID are down and we are slowly opening up again.

    Good well soon, Trish!

    1. Thank you Debra. You make a good point about the refusers. Vaccines are nothing new here either, and routinely given to children at certain milestones. In the 1950s everyone lined up for their Polio vaccines, and that disease was eliminated in most of the world. It does seem that social media is part of the problem, putting false science out into the community. Glad to read your numbers are down - I think we still have to go through the pain of numbers rising!

  4. Jacaranda trees are so beautiful - they grew where we lived in South America and I haven't seen one since! I hope that your state will be successful in their vaccination strategy, and that you will soon be able to travel to see your daughter and her family. They do look like they are having fun.

    1. Yes, I knew they came from South America, as the first one came to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens in the mid 1800s from Brazil and all the ones in our city now are said to have descended from it! The State Government sure is trying hard with the vaccinations this week, out every day encouraging people. Fingers crossed for travel next year.

  5. I'm so pleased you are recuperating slowly, Patricia. That's wise of you. Always best not to rush things! I must say the Royals always look so elegant with never a hair out of place. Amazing! Good to hear your life is opening up again too. I think the notion of 'living with Covid' is taking root here too, although the conditions for living even a normal life are pretty difficult. It definitely puts me off travelling even though I could. I want to go to the UK but despite being double vaccinated, we still have to have PCR tests both ends and they add enormously to the costs. I think we'll be staying at home for a while!

    1. Yes, opening up and in fact even living here 'covid free' is far from normal these days. So many rules to remember and be careful all the time. Australia opens up some international travel in the next few weeks, but it is subject to tests etc too, and only directed at reuniting dual citizens of the Asia/Pacific region. Travel for us is a long way off, and there is always the prospect of not being able to come back due to rules changing. Home seems best, wherever it is. Enjoy your new surroundings.

  6. He he, you voice what I think! Yes there is some much needed hope now. I check on Air Canada now and then, waiting for the Brisbane- Vancouver direct flight to return 😍🇨🇦

  7. Patricia, I hope you heal nicely from your surgery and get some rest. Kate looks dazzling in RED, and those heels are
so high! I think I would fall on my face if I wore them haha. The Jacarandas tree is beautiful, and I would see them grace the town where I lived in So Calif. I do hope you get to see
your grandchildren soon. Every couple of months, and I start to miss mine terribly.

Stay safe, Patricia, and thinking of you there at Summertime. It's still Fall here, and we have a big storm heading our way.
But I'm not worried cause we need the rain so much. Friday
and Saturday lots of rain and Sunday and Monday even more.
Thank you for your lovely post this Saturday morning. : )

    1. ps.....I'm sorry my words are all jumbled on the comments lately. Not sure why, but it's been happening a lot when
      I comment on friends' blogs.

    2. Dear Sheri, Do not worry about the text, we all know Blogger is quite crazy at times! Thank you for your nice long comments. You make a good point about Kate's heels - they are higher than I ever wore, and I cannot imagine how women walk in them. I think I gave up on those stilettos when I was about 40. We are hoping to see our twin grandsons from Sydney in the near future, as the border is supposed to open at 70% vaccination. fingers crossed! And we are also having storms at the moment, last week there were twisters at Brisbane Airport, and large hail in some areas. We need rain too, but preferably without destruction! Enjoy the beautiful leaves of Fall.

  8. Patricia, I can't believe a squirrel jumped up your husband's leg, and started climbing up, Yikes! I heard they are getting
more aggressive and bold these days. A couple young ones come
into my yard and climb up and down the trees and scurry on the
ground looking for pine nuts, and when they get too close to the house, right away I knock on the screen door or knock on
the window and shoooo them away. Well, they will scurry off for a short while, but come right back. I don't seem to have
them in the Winter, maybe cause it's too cold and snows. But
they have always scared me, and I DON'T LIKE THEM! haha.
Thanks for sharing your story. I'm wondering what your husband did when that happened, and how did he get that mischievous critter off of him, oh my?

    1. I went looking for a photo of the very naughty squirrel, but apparently it all was so quick, no photo was taken. I think my husband jumped in shock and probably hit the squirrel and it went down again. My daughter has them at her place in Canada and she doesn't like them either, as they do all the things you describe. She calls them vermin!
