THE GARDEN OF NEGLECT

Suddenly, it is Iris time again..

I looked out the window and there was this beauty, looking up at me...

A mid-Winter check on the Red Cardinal Garden of Neglect seems in order..

Shade plants are all growing well:

we have had quite a few Winter rainy days, which is unusual.

Many of our Winters see brown grass and plants all over..

We planted a new garden of Tree Ferns along the fence - so far, so good..

Lavender coming into flower..

Ye olde stalwart, Poinsettia always arrives around the Feast of Pentecost, and lasts until Christmas..

We are also caring for a dozen of our son's hanging basket plants.

This succulent hangs down like Rapunzel's hair!

We have an Australian native shrub near the front door -

it flowers most of the year.  Handy.

Yellow rose has bloomed again - Goody...

As always, we have my late father's Maidenhair Fern, which sits by a window of the living room:

It is the best, strongest fern ever.  I never change the soil or fertilize it..

It is just how he left it when he went into care in 2012..

Magical....

Thank you all for your kind comments about my eye issues.

I had a lot of different tests at the Opthalmologist, and have very dry eyes.

It is possible I have turned allergic to the drops I was using, and the new drops cause unpleasant side effects.

There have been blood tests to check for immune system disfunctions.

Meantime, I am learning a bit of eye care, doing some research, and see my doctor next week.

Getting older is not for the faint-hearted :)

Have a beautiful weekend

XXXX

  1. Is your native Australian shrub with the pink flowers a Leptospermum? If so, I too have it in my garden. I know that they get manuka honey from the one with the white flowers, and I suspect that the same must apply to the pink ones too.

    1. Yes, I think it is Rosemary, and I love the idea you have it as well. My parents had one and I always thought it was pretty. The bees hang around it, so that is probably true about the honey. Quite a few people in our area have bee hives.

  3. Your maidenhair fern is a wonder. I cannot keep one alive here. For all your supposed neglect your garden is showing beautiful blooms.

    1. That fern is special. I cannot keep them alive either when I buy one. It would be very old, so is probably an 'original' fern, not one that has been experimented with!

  4. Oh I'm sorry to hear you are having eye discomfort but happy you have good doctors to figure out how to treat it, Trish!

What beauty in your Garden of Neglect! The roses and Irish are very photogenic and I imagine the green shrubs are as pretty!

    1. Hello Debra, it seems to be a common problem as we get older. We are pleased with the garden when we have a season when we get rain! Some years it does not rain for six months...

  5. Ah!! Dry eyes, yes I can sympathize. I had 2 new eyes two years ago (ie. cataract surgery!)and still have dry eyes but I manage without drops unless it is really uncomfortable. I do hope this is the reason for your problem Patricia.
I agree ageing is not fun at times but aren't we lucky we have all the knowledge and aids. I also have 2 new ears (courtesy hearing aides!) I don't have a bad hearing loss but once I read an article that deafness, even mild deafness can result in cognitive decline you couldn't see me for dust as I sought out an audiologist.
I think you have a lovely garden. We are house hunting and some of what we are seeing is depressing.
I am very impressed with your maidenhair fern, I don't have success. I inherited my dads orchids and have managed to keep them alive and blooming. They are currently at our rental awaiting us to move in.
Life is very unsettling not least Covid but I think it keeps us on our toes, it doesn't do to get too fixed does it!
    Cheers Lindsey

    1. Dry eyes do seem to be common. I have heard privately from a few friends after I posted about it. I do have small cataracts but there is probably something else going on as well. There are other symptoms which I did not realise were connected. Now you have scared me into doing something next about my hearing :) I have heard that too re cognitive decline. Well done with the orchids, I have a lot of trouble keeping them going and have a high death rate, Oh dear. Gardening is the best thing during Covid confusion. The two garden centres nearby are having booming business and are beautifully stocked with plants and accessories.
