On the hottest day of last week's heatwave, I went to the movies, solo..
It's been years since I did that.
Saw the Book Thief, which was excellent -
set in Germany during World War II.
It stars Brisbane's own Geoffrey Rush
and is adapted from the book by young Australian author Markus Zusak.
Today I heard him interviewed on radio and learnt that his parents lived through the war as children, meeting as adults after emigrating, separately, to Australia. Their stories helped Zusak develop ideas and the theme of his novel.
I see The Book Thief has an Oscar nomination for the music, which was very effective.

Now it is a bit cooler, I am able to do a bit of sewing.
Finished a pair of black linen, lined, pants, made from McCalls M6361.
How does one take a picture of straight black pants - it's harder than you'd think..

I've almost finished this dress, a very popular Vogue V1250 Donna Karan design. Might attempt a selfie for this one..

An unusual pair of birds greeted me today; I did not recognise them at all.
I searched through the pictures in our Field Guide to Birds of Australia, and think they are the White-headed Pidgeon. They are quite large, 38-41cm, and their habitat is described as rainforest, scrub, or gardens.

DeletePhew that must have been some heatwave you've just encountered Patricia but so glad you have some relief now with the rain too. Here in the UK we are fed up with the rain - it's non stop and so miserable with grey skies and plenty of winds. But hey ho, Spring is just around the corner - although there is some talk of snow next week! What next I wonder......

There is a cyclone about to hit the coast in north Qld today, Patricia. Our showers and cooler temps probably come from that. Enjoying it while we can. Looking forward to Autumn here.

ReplyDeleteI have that film on my list, and yes, I go to the cinema alone, but only started doing so last year when I wanted to see something that H didn't. I wouldn't think twice about it now, but would just go.
Ah, yes, the changing of our language, by stealth! I have picked up the Americanisation adopted by the fashion industry. Trousers were slacks here, and, yes pants were knickers. Not any more, it seems. As you say, once you have tried the cinema alone, it seems perfectly normal. If the heat comes back, I'll do it again. With the Oscars around the corner, this is the best time of year for good films.

ReplyDeleteSuch a relief indeed Michelle. I could take a liking to solo trips to the movies too; there are definite advantages! With the cooler days I have been able to wear the linen pants and they work really well.xx

DeleteThe slacks are very comfortable, and I think the silk lining works well with linen. They are a basic item which will be well-used. The dress is in a swirly printed jersey in black, grey, teal and salmon. It might go out for lunch on Saturday - we'll see...
No rain in Sydney yet, but I'm wait for it, love the look of your black pants.

Glad you had some rain to cool down. When I was in Hawaii, almost every other person we met was from Australia getting relief from the heat.

DeleteOoh, I missed this post! I so well remember the blessing of rain in South Africa after a long period of drought. Now I wish it would stop although I must admit, I never 'longed' for rain even in SA. I was perfectly happy with the five months from April to September when we didn't have any at all, but the ground and the plants just loved it!
ReplyDeleteI imagine our climate here is similar to what you knew in Africa, Val. It is common for us to have no rain for those five months over winter, but we do need it in the summer to make up! Dry summers bring trouble: bushfires, low water levels, dead crops and gardens ... at least we are getting a bit of rain now, but not the monsoons we had in the New Year in times gone by. Climate change it is.

ReplyDeleteI love your pink roses, and the raindrops make them even prettier. Those birds do look familiar, but they are black AND white, so not sure. They look like Valentine birds, don't they? This sounds like a good movie - I enjoy movies like this one. I'm glad you got a little rain. We did also, and it was much needed.

DeleteSo glad the rain arrived for you at last, Patricia, even if it didn't stay long. Would you like some of ours? We have lots to spare. :-) I'm afraid we never go to the cinema, preferring to wait until the films arrive on TV and we can watch them from the comfort of our own chairs.
