RAIN AND A HOME-GROWN STAR

We have rain!
and Cooler Temperatures!!
The roses give thanks by bursting into bloom...

only a few showers, over a couple of days, but we are so grateful..

On the hottest day of last week's heatwave, I went to the movies, solo..
It's been years since I did that.

Saw the Book Thief, which was excellent -
set in Germany during World War II.

It stars Brisbane's own Geoffrey Rush
and is adapted from the book by young Australian author Markus Zusak.
Today I heard him interviewed on radio and learnt that his parents lived through the war as children, meeting as adults after emigrating, separately, to Australia.  Their stories helped Zusak develop ideas and the theme of his novel.

I see The Book Thief has an Oscar nomination for the music, which was very effective.

Do you ever go to the movies alone?

The University of Queensland

(Gossip Dept:  Geoffrey Rush was a graduate of the University of Queensland - just like the Red Cardinals)

Now it is a bit cooler, I am able to do a bit of sewing.
Finished a pair of black linen, lined, pants, made from McCalls M6361.

How does one take a picture of straight black pants - it's harder than you'd think..

I've almost finished this dress, a very popular Vogue V1250 Donna Karan design.  Might attempt a selfie for this one..

An unusual pair of birds greeted me today; I did not recognise them at all.
I searched through the pictures in our Field Guide to Birds of Australia, and think they are the White-headed Pidgeon.  They are quite large, 38-41cm, and their habitat is described as rainforest, scrub, or gardens.

Thank you for visiting..

Keep dry, and either warm or cool depending on your latitude..

XXXX

  2. Phew that must have been some heatwave you've just encountered Patricia but so glad you have some relief now with the rain too. Here in the UK we are fed up with the rain - it's non stop and so miserable with grey skies and plenty of winds. But hey ho, Spring is just around the corner - although there is some talk of snow next week! What next I wonder......

    1. There is a cyclone about to hit the coast in north Qld today, Patricia. Our showers and cooler temps probably come from that. Enjoying it while we can. Looking forward to Autumn here.

  3. Looking very smart in your black pants Patricia - it is strange for me to use the word pants for trousers as pants here means knickers!!!
I have that film on my list, and yes, I go to the cinema alone, but only started doing so last year when I wanted to see something that H didn't. I wouldn't think twice about it now, but would just go.

    1. Ah, yes, the changing of our language, by stealth! I have picked up the Americanisation adopted by the fashion industry. Trousers were slacks here, and, yes pants were knickers. Not any more, it seems. As you say, once you have tried the cinema alone, it seems perfectly normal. If the heat comes back, I'll do it again. With the Oscars around the corner, this is the best time of year for good films.

    1. Such a relief indeed Michelle. I could take a liking to solo trips to the movies too; there are definite advantages! With the cooler days I have been able to wear the linen pants and they work really well.xx

  6. Hello Dear Patricia,
I just love your black slacks. How talented you are, they look really super on you.
I am dying to see "The book thief"- I think Jeffrey Rush a most excellent talented artist.
I never go to the movies anymore, and have never been alone.
In the old days, I would go with mr M. once in a while..
I think I will see if I can buy the film.. add it to my video collection.
Not long now Patricia.. and you will be flying away.
Glad you are having some cooler days. The rain is always welcome when hot.
    Happy week.

  7. Pretty roses with raindrops. We had a bit of rain this morning and while we aren't as hot as you've been we are dry, dry, dry here in Northern CA.

Really like your slacks and am so impressed that you lined them. What color are you making the dress in?

    1. I love that rose, Darla, pretty in all weather!
The slacks are very comfortable, and I think the silk lining works well with linen. They are a basic item which will be well-used. The dress is in a swirly printed jersey in black, grey, teal and salmon. It might go out for lunch on Saturday - we'll see...

    1. Hi Shell, I'd love to send you some rain, but Please Don't send that 39 deg up here! I'm planning to read the Book Thief too - it must be a very special book. Happy Weekend, and Keep Cool. xx

    2. Your black pants look great - isn't it nice to sew something that ends up looking that good? Geoffrey Rush is so talented. I had no idea you went to the same University. Glad you had some rain to cool down. When I was in Hawaii, almost every other person we met was from Australia getting relief from the heat.

    3. Hi Beryl, it took a while, but I like those lined pants. Aha, so that's where the smart Australians are going to avoid the heat. Next January, we have to go someplace cool too!

  11. No I haven't ever been to see a movie by myself - that is funny as I've been thinking about it lately too. I'm a movie buff - my husband is not (he actually has had a huge back op so I'm giving him a pass)!
What a pity you live so far away!
I'm still reading The Book Thief - always have several books of different genres on the go.
Gorgeous black pants - they fall beautifully!

    1. You too, reading the Book Thief - I really must get my hands on a copy asap! Thank you, re the pants, which took a bit of time and fiddling, but worked out well eventually. And yes, so near and yet too far to go to movies together :) xox

  12. Ooh, I missed this post! I so well remember the blessing of rain in South Africa after a long period of drought. Now I wish it would stop although I must admit, I never 'longed' for rain even in SA. I was perfectly happy with the five months from April to September when we didn't have any at all, but the ground and the plants just loved it!

    1. I imagine our climate here is similar to what you knew in Africa, Val. It is common for us to have no rain for those five months over winter, but we do need it in the summer to make up! Dry summers bring trouble: bushfires, low water levels, dead crops and gardens ... at least we are getting a bit of rain now, but not the monsoons we had in the New Year in times gone by. Climate change it is.

  13. Patricia,
I love your pink roses, and the raindrops make them even prettier. Those birds do look familiar, but they are black AND white, so not sure. They look like Valentine birds, don't they? This sounds like a good movie - I enjoy movies like this one. I'm glad you got a little rain. We did also, and it was much needed.

    Have a very nice week.

    Love,
    ~Sheri

  14. So glad the rain arrived for you at last, Patricia, even if it didn't stay long. Would you like some of ours? We have lots to spare. :-) I'm afraid we never go to the cinema, preferring to wait until the films arrive on TV and we can watch them from the comfort of our own chairs.

I love seeing the clothes you sew for yourself. You really are so talented.
