LOVELY WEATHER FOR DUCKS

HALLELUIA, the rain has come!
It has rained solidly for 24 hours, and the garden is sending up thanks.
And I am enjoying a cooler respite from the heatwave.

Look at what our front lawn became over the past few months...

The most exposed parts have become a despicable shade of murky grey/brown..

Sadly, the rain has come at some cost.
Cyclone Oswald is wreaking havoc in northern and central Queensland.
There have been swift water rescues, and flash flooding is predicted.

It's Australia Day tomorrow, but with 200-300mm of rain predicted for Brisbane over the weekend, festivities will be restrained or cancelled.
Water is being released from the dams tonight, to avoid serious flooding.

I finished Vogue V8786, the bright summer floral..

While the seaming doesn't really show up in the busy print,
it gives it a good fit when worn...

Blue earrings to pick up the accent colour ..
I've been searching for ages for a jacket pattern with raglan sleeves.
Behold what arrived in the mail this week:

Vintage McCalls from the late 1950s, found on ebay for $8.00!!
I'm not sure what fabric I'll use, but I can't wait to start this one.

The blog hit another milestone today:
15,000 page views ..

Don't forget the Red Cardinal giveaway, a red bird brooch from elk accessories.
All Followers go into the draw ...

I'm baking cookies -
What are you doing this weekend?

Stay warm or dry, according to your hemisphere!

  1. I am just sitting here listening to the sound of the rain...music to my ears!!! This week end was to be a beach volleyball weekend on the Gold Coast...not going to happen...

    1. No, I think we can be assured of no beach volleyball this weekend, or anything else requiring a bit of sunshine, Judith. I'm also enjoying the music of the rain - so soothing.

  2. With such a heavy downpour of rain it will not take your grass long to recover - it is very forgiving.
This weekend I am sending Mr Snow on his way - a week is long enough!!!

    1. Fingers crossed, Rosemary, that after the rain goes, the scorching heat does not return. A good soaking does the world of good, and hopefully it is a turning point in the seasons. Now if Mr Snow could just take a trip over here, that could be interesting! However, I suspect he has joined his friends in Ottawa, from what my daughter says...

  3. Gosh, this weather does not do things by halves does it! What a shame the celebrations may have to be cancelled but on a brighter note for your lawn, it'll turn a nice shade of green now hopefully. Suzy x

    1. So true, Suzy, call it climate change, global warming, or anything you like, weather has certainly taken a turn for the dramatic of late. Daughter in Ottawa has frozen pipes and minus 40 deg, we have been fried in the heat and will now be drowned in the rain. A return of a pretty green lawn is a distinct possibility :) x

  4. Fortunately, Valerie, cyclones very rarely make it to Brisbane. We just get the associated rains, sometimes very heavy for a few days. Floods are more of a worry, but I am secretly hoping our creek will have broken its banks by morning...so exciting for the local wild ducks!

  5. You have been busy.... I love the vintage pattern... aren't they gorgeous ? I have a few stacked up, but have never got around to finding quite the right fabric. good luck.... and have a wonderful Australia Day. My daughter Jess was in Sydney for Austrlaia day 3 years ago...... and she still talks about it.... and has the Aussie flag that she altered to make a dress out of. I think she was hung over for days afterwards ! Anyway, have a good day. Jx

    1. My first vintage pattern purchase, and I am very leased with it Janice. It is wonderful to have rain for Australia Day, even if everything else is cancelled. Sydney is the best on Aus.Day; I'm sure your daughter had a blast! Happy weekend..

  6. The rain must be welcome after the weather you have had. I really like the dress, looks like it will be perfect for many occasions.

I am taking off for the house by the Bay this morning. It looks like it will be pretty foggy going over the mountains so it may take me longer than usual.

    1. Yes, the rain is so welcome and I love the sound of it on the roof. Do take care on those foggy mountains, and enjoy the Bay.

  7. You really go through extreme weathers over there too. Good to have rain, but not all at once, as the dry ground can´t absorb it so fast.
So, what´s the temperature now? We have -12C, as I write, late Friday evening.

    1. Extreme weather is an Australian specialty also. People often quote a poem about 'drought and flooding rains', which seem to be the main features. So true, the dry ground cannot absorb all the water and a lot runs off to become the floods. Temperature now a balmy low 20s, very pleasant, and I think you may find -12C an improvement on last week?

  8. Extreme weather seems to be the new order of business these days. Hope you don't get flooding. Is that a poinsettia bloom? Lovely. I have inherited all my mothers patterns from the 60s/70s/80s. I would be more than happy to pass some along to you. I will go through them soon and photograph what I think you might be interested in and send to you via email. And Happy Australia Day! Please consider a post telling us the type activities done to celebrate

    1. Extreme weather indeed, Sanda, and all over the globe. yes that is a poinsettia bloom, which will go into the garden one of these days. So exciting to have an inheritance of priceless patterns - I would love to hear more about them, thank you! I am thinking about celebratory activities - this year most have been cancelled because of rain, but I could still discuss it..

  9. Glad to hear your rain has arrived, Patricia, but I hope not in such volume as to cause any damaging flooding. Your temperature sounds much more comfortable too. Here the thaw has come and the temperature is at last above freezing and rising, but with it we're promised a lot of rain. Still, it should put paid to the last of the snow....
