BUSY DOING NOTHING

Sometimes I don't know how to start a blog post...
Writer's block, perhaps?
I know I am not as sharp as I used to be...

We have had a bit of rain, now and then..
The gorgeous red King Parrots came to shelter on our deck..

I have been busy writing tours for QAGOMA, at the rate of one per fortnight - and then going in to take a small group of visitors on tour around our beautiful galleries.  It is a rewarding volunteer position, which keeps me alert and thinking...

I like this large, bright, Contemporary Indigenous work by Qld. artist Naomi Hobson.  'When the Tide Goes Out' (2018), is a seascape inspired by her father's sea country.  Hobson lives in North Queensland, near the Great Barrier Reef, and here we look into the colourful underwater world of the reef.  A variety of crabs, coral, and Beche de Mer (Sea Cucumbers) cover the canvas, a riot of exotic life and colour.

Jacaranda season arrived about two weeks early this year, covering the city in purple glory.

I finally finished the snippet roll I began stitching back in January.  It is two metres long, and is a random, hand made and embroidered creation made from bits of old fabric, lace, trims, embroideries, crotchet, buttons and odds and ends lurking in my sewing room.  Plus a few little watercolours I did on calico.

It is not easy to photograph but here are a few glimpses:

It is entitled 'Down the Garden Path'..

I found a little packet of red cardinal buttons when we visited a quilt shop in Almonte, Ontario, last May.  A couple of them made their way into my work..

We are off to a Symphony concert on Friday night - a violin concerto and a symphony: Bliss!

I am probably the last person on earth to join a book club, but I finally found one I could fit into my regular routine, and I am loving it.
Thank goodness for my trusty Kindle, so much quicker and easier to obtain the set books each month.
I loved English Lit at university, and am looking forward to similar discussions at our meetings.  I bought a notebook and am dutifully making notes as I go.  This month I am reading 'A Terrible Kindness' by Jo Browning Wroe.  Not sure where this plot is going, but don't tell me!

I hope all is well in your world.
We are all shocked by the events in the Middle East.  I pray for Peace, and a quick resolution of this and other Wars.

Take care

  1. So climate change may have had an unexpected benefit. The Jacaranda season arrived early this year, covering the city in canopies of purple glory. The blossoms look very dense and the colour looks utterly sublime.

    1. Our purple city is indeed sublime at this time of the year. We do love our Jacarandas.

  2. Those red King Parrots are beautiful. Imagine seeing those on my porch area. Patricia, your stitching project is so special. I especially liked the pink blossom tree and white chair. What a talent you have with this. All the old fabric and lace and buttons look wonderful. The Jacaranda trees are beautiful, and I think I've mentioned that I used to see them all around in So Cal when I lived there, and when the petals fell on the ground, it was such a sight. The tours that you volunteer at sound nice, and what an interesting thing that must be for you.

I liked your title, Busy doing Nothing. You know, sometimes doing nothing can be the best days of all. It gives us a chance to see all the little things around us, which can bring so much joy.

    1. I enjoyed this free form of embroidery very much. Stitching along without knowing how it will end is quite liberating! The back of the little white chair is a piece of tatted lace made by my mother. The Jacaranda tree comes originally from South America, so I can imagine they would do very well in So Cal, where the climate is similar to ours.

  4. How fun to find red cardinal buttons for your snippet roll. It looks like a beautiful piece of this and that combined with your lovely stitches.
I think jacaranda trees in bloom are the prettiest things. Have fun doing nothing!

    1. I was so happy to see those buttons in the quilt shop. I gave one to each of my sewing friends. Previously I have made a few small snippet rolls, but this was my big extravaganza, and it was so enjoyable. We love our Jacarandas here in Brisbane, and we love our own tree most of all :)

  5. The Indigenous work by Qld. artist Naomi Hobson. 'When the Tide Goes Out' is lovely - the colours, the concept and the design. I would happily display it on my walls.
Your snippet roll is delightful - I can imagine just how delighted you were when you found those red cardinal buttons.

    1. I would be happy to own the Hobson painting too; it is so fresh and vibrant and one of her best. Never in Australia have I seen red cardinal buttons, and I was indeed very pleased to find these and buy a good supply!

  6. Oh my, I do love all the same things that you do...nature, music, art, books and peace! The creation that you have shown us, you are so very talented. "Down The Garden Path", that is truly beautiful.

    1. Thank you Kay, I think we do indeed like the same things. I remember I liked the same things when I was five years old, so nothing changes, lol. I had a needle in my fingers before I went to school, and learnt to play piano while I learnt the alphabet! I am really pleased with the garden path, as it was so liberating to just 'paint' a collage with no pattern or instructions and what was here in my house. Glad you enjoyed it.

  7. HI Trish!
I think it's wonderful how you give your time and keep yourself busy physically and mentally. I think it's such a healthy thing to do. I'm obsessed with your snippet roll!!! It's so beautiful and just the neatest idea to kind of be random and add things you just have on hand. Truly a special piece. Love the red buttons 😉 Blessings on your weekend ahead. PS: love anything you share xoxo

    1. Thanks Carrie, I enjoy your blog too. A snippet roll is fun - I bet you would enjoy it too. Finding an old spool to wrap it around can be fun too. I might ask my daughter to look out for more old those red cardinal buttons. You can never have too many :) xx

  8. Naomi's painting is stunning! How lucky you are to have the King parrots visit regularly. I have sporadic visits
Trish your snippet roll is gorgeous...love it! It seems this kind of stitching is perfect for you and I.
I hope you enjoyed your concert xx
PS I have been a very bad blogger of late.

    1. We see more King parrots since we chased away the cockatoos by refusing to feed them. They threw some mighty tantrums before they worked out I would not relent, lol. I loved the concert: Mendelssohn and Dvorak, two of my faves. But when you do blog, we all love it. It seems we are on a similar wavelength here with our slow stitching. I am now trying to finish the Christmas one I did last year! xx

    1. Thank you caitlinsgrandma. I feel very pleased with the snippet roll, having gone all out on this one. There are little ones I did previously, one of which features a lot of Mum's bits and pieces. It is very much a personal create as you go sort of activity.

  10. Oh your snippet roll is so lovely. I've never heard of that before but I'm very impressed with yours. It looks so pretty. Just to put your mind at ease; I have not got a book club but think I'd like one as I read every night. I must get onto that. Sofie Sew Darn Tired.

    1. Hi Sofie, go pleased you like my snippet roll. It is a fun way to use some of the collected treasures in the sewing room. Some bookclubs can be found by asking at local libraries. I hope you find one; it is fun to share your reading. xx
