NEW YEAR - AND A NEW WAVE

Lunch in the fresh air at our local Garden Centre was our personal New Year's celebration...

On my plate, a pretty pink snapdragon flower.

A few metres from the tables, there is an edible garden to supply the cafe..

Herbs and lots of outdoor art pieces to tempt us...

Three weeks ago, our State of Queensland was experiencing many Covid-free days...but those days are now gone.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have wondered if our mild climate kept Covid19 at bay - but it seems that it was our State's method of closing borders and strict quarantine that was keeping us safe.  We have had lockdowns whenever there was a flare up, sometimes only for a few days. Until this week there have only been about six deaths since the pandemic began.  And we wear our masks.

It had been planned to open the borders when we reached 80% vaccination, and with a push, this happened the week before Christmas.  Despite the arrival of Omicron in our country, this plan went ahead and hundreds of thousands of returning residents, tourists and visitors, have come into our beautiful State, no longer required to Quarantine.

The virus has now enveloped our State and city.  Case numbers have risen to over 10,000 per day over the past two days.  The testing centres have become overwhelmed and most have shut down;  The Government admits the actual numbers are much higher, but testing has become impossible for ill people. Those who must test wait for many hours at the few remaining places. Many are turned away. The RAT self-administered tests have sold out, and only small amounts are expected to come - some time.

We are being told there will be thousands upon thousands of cases in the next few weeks, and that we are all probably going to get the virus.  The previous mantra of looking after the elderly has vanished - it seems to be up to us to make our own choices.

The hospital systems are already in trouble - so many staff are absent with Covid, and medical professionals are at breaking point.  We are now told if we develop symptoms, to stay home and rest, do not go seeking a test or go searching for a doctor.  We are now looking at food shortages, with deliveries to major supermarkets compromised by lack of staff, so many are at home ill.

Strangely, we are not in lockdown.

It seems that lockdown has gone out of favour as a strategy.

Our Premier has asked people to stay home unless they really need to go out, but that is all.   We are doing what so many of you have done for a very long time - stay home, go out carefully for necessities, and otherwise occupy ourselves as creatively as possible at home.  We are both double vaxed, and have appointments for our Booster but know that many vaccinated people still catch Omicron.

We are very grateful for our Red Cardinal nest, high on a hill with plenty of breeze, and a large garden to enjoy.  At the moment we have made our own rules, seeing only family members and avoiding crowds.

We had one final little celebration of our 50th Anniversary, meeting with my two sisters who were bridesmaids at our wedding.

Now the pretty cards have been tied with a ribbon and gone into a memory box.

Where have all those years gone?

We are also enjoying time with our one-year-old twin grandsons, and to our delight they are getting to know and trust us.  What fun times we have together!
I have reorganized the house after taking down the Christmas decorations, putting precious pieces up high or away for a year or two, and amusing myself putting interesting things down low where they can find them.

Have a good, and safe, week.

XXXXX

  1. Happiest 50th Anniversary!
    Prayers for everyone's health

Lock downs, I believe, work to help decrease the spread of covid. Maybe if a kinder sounding name for it would make it feel acceptable.

    Stay safe

    1. Thank you Salty Pumpkin. I think lock downs work well - it was used 500 years ago in Europe when the Plague was around. The name Omicron sounds like a bad guy Transformer toy to me :)

  2. Patricia, I'm so sorry that there are so many people getting the virus in your state, that's terrible. I'm glad you are spending precious time with your twin grandsons, and I'm sure they will love that little stuffed toy lying on the ground when they are old enough to reach for it. How cute that is.
Happy 50th Anniversary to you, dear friend. That's simply wonderful.

    1. Thank you Sheri. New South Wales to the South of us actually has far, far more cases, but they seem to have better resources. However, the situation is quite dire and it seems they all have been caught unawares by Omicron.

  3. Happy 50th anniversary Patricia! Glad that you could see your two sisters on your milestone anniversary.
I’ve had my booster, but still mask up at the grocery store, avoid crowds and keep with a small circle of friends here in Sarasota, Florida. From all current health official reports here the Omicron isn’t as harmful if you’ve been vaccinated but it does spread rapidly compared to the Delta variant.
I enjoy you posts! Stay well.

    1. Hi Paula, and welcome to my blog. Good to hear you had the chance for a booster, that is key. However masks and avoiding crowds are so important. Hi to Florida! We had a holiday there in 1998 and the weather was lovely, very similar to Queensland. Glad you enjoy, and you stay well too.

  4. Hi Patricia, how depressing that you have such a huge wave of cases. We also still have thousands every day, and we are in lockdown, so I’m not really sure how much it helps. Oddly our numbers only dropped during the summer, but it’s summer in Australia now, so it seems very difficult to manage this virus. We all wear masks everywhere, and keep to our own bubbles. I’m hoping we get through it all without catching it. Keep well, Patricia!

    1. Hi Val, yes, very hard to manage the virus. We thought Summer and mild climate was making a difference, but clearly not. So sorry there are thousands every day there too, as it seems we also have but lots can't be tested. It has happened so suddenly here that we are in shock, and just looking at my appointments this week, made before Christmas. Will need to cancel most of them! Wear masks, and keep in our bubbles. Best advice there is. I hope you and I do not get it!!

  5. Happy 50th anniversary to you and your hubby!
Covid is bad here in Georgia, USA too. I've had both vaccinations and the booster shot. I wear masks and try not to get around people. Wish me luck!
Take care of yourself, my friend!

    1. Thank you! Oh, I do wish you luck, it seems to be the same all over. It has been so sudden, we were 'asleep at the wheel' during the good times. From zero to 11,000 since Christmas is a lot to process! Be safe, take care. Let's keep blogging :))

  7. This new variant is making inroads in Canada, too. Our province (BC) has fewer restrictions than other provinces. We all have to wear masks in malls, offices, etc. We've been told that we will probably all be exposed to the variant, but that it seems to cause less severe symptoms. My brother and his family caught it over Christmas and their symptoms varied a lot between various people.
We are awaiting our booster doses - should get them in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, life goes on. We see family, but that's about it. And I'm so glad we can see them, because last year at this time we could not.
    Take good care, Patricia.

    1. We are told much the same, but alas, some people do have a bad reaction to the new variant, so we all must take care. It seems many of us are doing the same as you, and we are also avoiding close contact outside of our family. We are so pleased our son managed to leave Sydney and return to Brisbane; the virus is much worse down South. Alas, we have no idea when we can see our Canadians again... be safe.

  10. Beautiful photos Trish.....yes it is such a frightening time for the older folks and the ill! Sadly neither seem to be of concern whilst others are supposedly urged to act responsibly! We have been doing the same but having hospital treatment this week, apprehension is definitely being experienced here. Happy 50th Anniversary to you both...a wonderful milestone for you. Take care xx

    1. Thank you Michelle. We have enjoyed a number of small celebrations for our 50th and did not really miss having a big party. When we can eventually have all our family together in the same country, then we might celebrate! So very concerning when you must go near medical care right now, thinking of you both. Be safe xx

  11. Dearest Patricia,
First off, Congratulations with your Golden Wedding Anniversary.
So sad that due to the global tyranny there is hardly any room for celebration...
Those used to be milestones every family member was looking forward to.
Australia is very bad in its ruling and even with their 'camps'...
Also in my birth country, The Netherlands, where police in Amsterdam BRUTALLY BEAT Vaccine Protesters: https://youtu.be/8OwVX9oe9Lc
IF those vaccines were so good, then WHY are we still seeing that many cases of new 'Influenza', as that is what it was, is and always will be.
Previously all those that died from a bad case of Influenza never made the news, there was no reporting the numbers.
Too well I recall that every Sunday after Mass, over a cup of coffee we would call Mom & Dad in The Netherlands. The very first thing Mom would say: guess who died this week? EVERY week she in her elderly choir had to sing at one or even more funeral Masses! No mention ever back then...
Let's pray hard that Big Tech, Big Pharma and Global Banking elites are preparing for the big reset. Those vaccines are just the beginning, then being chipped and followed and controlled.
My Pieter often says, it is far more the young(er) generations that will get enslaved.
We ought to pray and stand firm in all this as they are taking away all our freedoms.
We're reading the #1 book by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (son of the murdered Dad and Uncle/President) who OPENS up about The Real Anthony Fauci https://amzn.to/3qQJMvH
    The biggest Genocide in history...
    May God help us all!
    Big hugs,
    Mariette

    1. Dear Mariette, I too wonder what sort of a world we are leaving to our little grandchildren. Robert F Kennedy Jr, I have always thought was one of the more interesting of the next generation of Kennedys. He has been on numerous documentaries we have seen on TV. His cousin Caroline Kennedy has recently been appointed Ambassador to Australia; previously she has been Ambassador to Japan. She will find Australia very different from the US.

  15. Happy 2022 my lovely Trish!
I'm so sorry that the numbers are sky rocketing again! But I think it is the same all over. It is the case here as well. And all of the testing sites are over run. Doing our best to be smart and precautious as well. I pray you stay healthy and have a very blessed year ahead. HOpefully with this virus going away FOR GOOD!! Sigh.

    1. Yes, the same all over, and now we have it here as well. I think we were all a little big smug keeping it away for 2 years, but our turn had to come. Today 20,500 new cases. Our population is 5 million. I don't know how that compares but I find it scary. Being smart and cautious is really all we can do now. We are avoiding crowds and no eating out. Stay healthy and safe too dear Carrie. Hugs and prayers for us all. xo
