LATEST NEWS

Last night we had a storm.
It was a firecracker of lightning and ear-shattering thunder.
And it brought more rain in an hour than we have seen in six month.

It was late, it kept us awake...
But we were so happy to see some rain to relieve our parched land, and our own grass and gardens.

It was also our Wedding Anniversary - 48 years together!
What a great gift we received.

Sadly, the bush fires have continued to ravage Eastern Australia.
This picture shows one of the Scenic Rim mountains we loved to take my late father to see.  He had a painting of it, and loved the beautiful temperate rain forests in the area.

Will there be more rain?

Perhaps a few more storms....

School holidays have begun, and Little Aussie came to spend a day with us.
We took him to GoMA to see the new exhibition "Water" - a look at the importance of water in our lives.

We explored "Riverbed" by Danish artist Olafur Eliasson.
This installation fills an enormous gallery space, a landscape with a sense of both repose and catastrophe.  It slopes gently downhill, with a narrow stream winding its way downwards.  The logistics of placing this in an indoor space are intriguing.

I took along a picture of an inukshuk to inspire our grandson, only to find many of them already there!  Everyone had the same idea (the exhibition had only been open three days).

Aussie noticed the makings of a face on this rock, and inserted tiny pebbles into 'eye' sockets.  Clever Little Aussie....

In fact, this face looks a lot like that of another installation:

Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Switzerland,  'Snowman' 1987-2017-19

Yes, there is a snowman in hot, hot Brisbane this Summer.
Created by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, 'Snowman', is in an encased water system, constructed from three copper spheres in a large freezer.
He must be maintained each day, his smile and eyes carefully reconstructed as the frost covers them.

I think Aussie was a bit disappointed to be separated from the snowman by a glass panel....

We all enjoyed these works, made from ghost nets (abandoned fishing nets)

A lovely recreation of a reef, 'Below the Tide Line', in the Children's Art Centre, developed in collaboration with Erub Arts, Marion Gaemers and Lynnette Griffiths.  The artists create sculptures made of ghost nets which cause great harm to marine life, to raise awareness about ocean pollution.

I can't miss this one: by Cai Guo-Qiang, 'Heritage' 2013, a group of animals around a serene lake, disturbed only by an occasional single drop of water from the ceiling.  The animals, some known, some imaginary, and often in different scale to reality.  This meditation raises more questions than answers: are they in harmony, or will they resume their predatory instincts as soon as their thirst is slaked?  What happened to cause all these animals to come together from around the world?

Water, essential to all life, has brought them here in a moment of stillness...

As it happens, while we are discussing water, I have discovered the new Pantone colour of the year for 2020.
Classic Blue, the colour of the sky and sea, and all clear bodies of water..

Watch out for Classic Blue, in decor and fashion, coming soon.....

Duchess Catherine went one shade darker in navy velvet at last night's Annual Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace.
She is looking very regal these days.

Her Majesty the Queen surprised royal watchers by wearing a previously unseen and very spectacular emerald and diamond necklace of fabulous proportions.
It is thought it may be from the Greville bequest (a collection of jewellery left to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother by Mrs Ronald Greville in 1942), and was matched beautifully with the emerald option of her Vladimir Tiara.

When you are 93, you can wear absolutely whatever you like!

Happy Christmas prep everybody..

  1. What a joy to have a wonderful heavy thunderstorm, I do hope that there is much more heading in your direction. I was shocked to see pictures of Sydney with a pinkish glow covering the entire city from the terrible fires.
What an intriguing exhibition, which little Aussie looks as if he is really enjoying. I bet he would have loved to be able to touch that snowman though.
May you and all of your family have a wonderful and happy Christmas time.

    1. Thank you for your kind wishes Rosemary, and I wish you a joyous, peaceful and happy Christmas too.
The air quality in Sydney is dire from all the fires, and worse than here although I find the smoke irritates my eyes a lot. I have never seen a Summer like this in all my long life. The exhibition, planned well in advance, has hit on a very topical theme indeed, and it is great fun for children on holidays. There are many adult works too, and as the gallery is very cool, it will be very popular this Christmas.

    1. Oh Michelle, so sorry you did not get much rain. It often happens to us that the rain goes north and south, and not towards us in the Western 'burbs. Our boy thanked us very nicely at the end of the day - love it when they show signs of maturity. Keep cool! xx

    1. Absolutely, I did not even complain about the thunder claps which made me jump. We got quite a lot of water into our tank. Hope you find your reference to Eliasson - he is so interesting. Looking forward to your post on blue.

  5. I'd love to be invited to something where a tiara was necessary! I'd have to borrow one. :)

How lovely is all the artwork.

One day Little Aussie will visit Canada and be able to make his own snowballs. How exciting it will be for him to see snow for the first time!

    1. We are water saving a lot here - a bucket in the shower to catch a bit of run-off, then out it goes on the roses. I am planning to buy a grey water system for the laundry waste water. Kate the Great, beautiful dark hair looks good with strong colours, and she nailed it this time.

  8. Val, I love that the Queen got out that necklace, probably thinking its now or never, give it an appearance. She does look simply amazing.
I would love to send you a storm, the smoke in Sydney is much worse than ours and I find even our level of it bothersome. Fingers crossed for rain!

  12. Happy Anniversary to you both! What a storm, and so needed. The heat and fires and the need for water are so worrying. I hope that things improve. Your young Aussie will love a Canadian winter with snowmen in abundance. wishing you a very happy holiday!

  13. Glad you made it through the storm, Patricia. That google image of the lightening is so pretty. Happy Anniversary! - oh my, 48 years, that's so special. Oh no, the fires are still going strong in Australia. I do hope they get them under control. You had a nice visit with little Aussie. He doesn't look that little any more, he sure is growing up. Boys do love to use their imagination with rocks. The snowman has such a cute smile, kind of mischievous. The fish are beautiful and full of color. I like the Queen's emerald tiara. I thought I've seen something like that on Diana, but not sure.

Christmas is coming! And I appreciate my blog friend very much. : )

    1. Hi Sheri, thank you for your good wishes. We can't believe it is 48 years, time flies so fast. Unfortunately our Aussie boy is growing at an alarming rate these days. He will be passing me in no time. He is 10 now. I think the snowman is cute and funny, although not everyone likes him, interestingly.
I remember Diana in diamonds too - I wonder if it was the same tiara?? Happy Christmas to you, dear bloggie friend. xx
