HEAT IN THE HOLIDAYS

Happy Unexpected Early Summer to all Australians!
It has been 35-38c here this week, a record for September in the Springtime.

And not a record we are thrilled to achieve...

I keep gazing at my new blue porcelain shell -
inspired by the new curtains...

A pair of rare King Parrots visited.
They are so shy, I had to take my pictures through the screen door, then the sound of the shutter frightened them away.

Peace

Little Aussie has been here, enjoying the school holidays...

Gladiator Exhibition, Queensland Museum

Little Aussie Gladiator...

Dug the broken sundial out of the plaster block faster than I could take a 'before' picture...

Checking it out in the sunshine to see if it works.
So far, so good.

Lego gladiators in a Lego Colosseum ...
disappointed we did not have enough white Lego!

Grow your own Coral kit...

Aussie loves the finished effect -
and painted his own little picture of it.
I think the boy tends towards the abstract....

These Crucifix orchids have gone mad in the heat -
three weeks ago they were dismal...

'Under the Jacaranda' Godfrey Rivers, QAG
Jacaranda season has arrived, early, and purple is bursting out all over Brisbane.

The new hang of the Australian Collection opens this weekend at QAG.
You will love it..

Have a good weekend

  1. The Jacarandas were in flower in S. Africa too - what a wonderful purple glow they create across the landscape.
Little Aussie doesn't seem to have any problems keeping himself entertained - he is very creative.

    1. Ah yes, I saw your photo of a jacaranda, and knew you were in the same latitude as Brisbane. They are gorgeous trees. I do enjoy watching the creativity of our grandson, who likes so many of the same things I do.

  2. Wow! That's hot! Our temps suddenly and drastically dropped, but I haven't heard one complaint (at least while we're still above freezing!). You keep your Little Aussie happy with art, crafts and pool. What an interesting coral growing kit. Love his rendition of it. Lego. My son's childhood was a sea of Lego. He also loved gladiators, although we called them his knights. Playmobil produced some of his favourite knight pieces, and I doubt he'll ever get rid of them.
Those king parrots are gorgeous! Incredible birds to be visiting you! Enjoy your springtime!

    1. We were all intrigued by the coral kit. It seems to be made from a type of blotting paper, and uses some unidentified liquid which came in little plastic bags. It is moist, and I think it will collapse in a few days but is fun while it lasts.
I'm so glad I kept the old Lego from our kids - it just goes on forever. Hi from the birds Wendy. x

  3. It was warm, wasn't it. We were not quite as hot as you, but still warm for here for that time of year - 33-34. Luckily it has passed for now, don't need heat for months.

    1. Yes, very hot indeed for September. It concerns me that we might be in for another extra hot Summer :(
Hope to get more wear from my 3/4 sleeve things - it might be cooler next week.

  4. Wow, that is hot. We are almost the same here, it was 92 today! Glad you got that shot of the parrots before they flew away!

    1. Almost twins, as both hemispheres change seasons. 92 is too darn hot too, methinks. So tricky trying to catch those King parrots on film, but not as difficult as Hummingbirds!

  5. I'm loving the heat! but it is unexpectedly early. There are just no seasons here anymore... we were struggling to get any before! We are getting ready to go to see Riverfire tonight. How fantastic to get the King parrots on your doorstep. I shoot at the Indian Minors (with a water pistol) to get them away so the magpies can sing their song.

    1. So true, the seasons are entirely unpredictable these days. Whatever happened to the Monsoon and Storm seasons? Enjoy Riverfire - we can see a bit of it from our deck. We don't like the noisy Minors either - might try a water pistol on ours too.

  6. Little Aussie Gladiator is precious! A fun, active age for little boys. Not long ago, a neighbor from my hometown came to Manhattan with her family. On trips home over the years I took my neighbor along with 2 of her sisters for walks with candy stops along the way. Now she's all grown up with a husband and children of her own. Her little 5 year old is so quick, clever and creative. A bundle of energy and very engaging. I was touched they wanted to spend one of their days here visiting me. Needless to say, I enjoyed seeing them!

As always, you have beautiful flowers and birds. I've never seen rare King Parrots. In the city we don't have colorful birds. They seem to be all black, or grey. As a child I saw red cardinals and blue jays. NYC has mostly pigons, sparrows and black birds.

Perhaps you can visit a Uniqlo in Canada this December to see their winter clothes.

Meanwhile stay cool. We just beginning the fall.

    1. Hi Debra, Thanks for your lovely comment. What a delight to have your neighbor come to Manhattan, and to show them some of the delights of the Big Apple. Little boys are so much fun. You must miss the pretty birds - but sparrows and black birds are cute in their own ways. Both times we went to NYC it was Fall, and always very beautiful.

    1. Thankfully, today is much cooler, expected maximum of 24c. After a week of intense heat I was concerned what sort of Summer awaits. Glad you enjoyed the orchids and parrots.

  8. Oh no! What kind of heat is that? Poor you! I adore Jacaranda trees. I'd love to see them again!

    1. Global warming type heat, I suspect!
Jacarandas are the best, decorating the city in that gorgeous purple. I know Africa has a lot of them too, very hardy trees in the right climate. I'm hoping our young tree produces more blooms this Summer.

  9. Looks like fun times at your end in spite of the extreme heat. I'm glad that our summer is almost over, it's been a long long one this year.

  10. I've never heard of the Crucifix Orchids before. I bet you've been enjoying little Aussie's visits. Your blue porcelain shell is so pretty. You always find such unique treasures, Patricia. What a cute picture of Aussie being "Gladiator." Do you know that Gladiator is one of my favorite movies to watch? Look at the King Parrots, oh my! They are amazing. I'm glad you got a picture of them, even through the screen.

Autumn has arrived for us in my area, and I'm loving every bit of it, especially the pumpkin goodies. ; )

    1. Hi Sheri, I guess the Crucitix orchids are a tropical plant because they do well in the heat. Gladiator is popular in Australia, because Russell Crowe is an Aussie! Wish I could go over and see your Autumn, it is just beautiful in America how you decorate your houses around the lovely time of year.

  11. Brisbane looks like a wonderful place to live. Jacarandas are my very favourite trees in bloom. I wish they grew here. That's a really charming picture your grandson did, even though it is abstract, he has a feel for colour. Good old Lego. I wish you could still get the general sets which build everything. Now they are all about building stuff which just stands there and gathers dust and isn't as good as a regular toy. But I guess that is what people want.... strange.

    1. Hello Jenny, so pleased you like Jacarandas too. We can be friends! (Some Aussies hate them, btw). Grandson declares he is planning to become an artist. Suits me. So true about Lego, it is all too specific and actually denies creativity. We just break them all up and go for it in a most random way. Our son found a website where you can see original instructions from years ago, if you want to go back and build the old things.
