NATURE AND FAMILIES

I love this view of the Mountains..so rugged and majestic, with a storm brewing in the distance.

Later, there was hail..

We took Dad here the other day, for his drive-in-the-country.

Back at the Red Cardinal nest, our gum tree had a few blossoms..

and a Lot of Lorikeets arrived to demolish them..

It was all over in about 15 minutes;
they can be quite greedy little birdies...

Spring is still springing, but Summer days are forecast for next week..

Because it has been school holidays, we took Little Aussie to see Dinosaur Discovery at the Queensland Museum..

I was pretty scared, especially when we came to the lifesized T-Rex..
All that roaring and gnashing of teeth - animatronics are incredible these days.

We also made cup cakes, read books, played Lego, and had a Disco Dance in the living room.
I was so exhausted I slept for 11 hours after he went home..

After that it was positively peaceful when the Sewing Sisters came for a visit.
With lunch..

and cake..

Oh, and maybe a little bit of stitching was done too.

I made a runner from old doilies, many of them donated by very nice friends.
They are held together with a few strategic stitches, and when I get tired of it, I can reverse engineer and re-use them in another project.

Thank you all for your kind comments on my last post.  I have been unwell, on and off, and it is lovely to have a cheer-squad..

Having a blog is such a good way of counting my blessings..

  1. Hi Patricia!
You certainly had a great time with Little Aussie....and I understand completely about being "pooped" after they leave!♥️
When our Miss V is here....we laugh so much...and then miss her when she leaves....grands are THE BEST!
Your runner looks so dainty...I like that look...bravo!
Enjoy your warm weather...we are heading into the cool weather here...:o(
Have a great weekend...we are off to the cottage this am...
    Cheers!

    2. You know absolutely how I felt, Linda. Much fun with the grandies, but tiring because of the responsibility, I find. I don't want anything bad to happen on my watch! Love my runner - so quick and easy, you can try it too :)

  2. Patricia, the dinosaur exhibit sounds wonderful. Little Aussie must have had the time of his life! So many interesting and thrilling things to see! The table runner made from all the doilies is so unique and pretty. That's very clever. The cupcakes look yummy - would love one with my coffee right now. : ) And those Lorikeets get me every time. Such an incredibly beautiful bird.

    Happy October, Patricia!

    1. The dinosaurs were excellent Sheri, live-size and they moved a bit plus there were sound effects. Very dramatic. They were in a rainforest setting with lots of ferns. A friend found the doily runner on Instagram - I thought it clever too, and very quick and easy.
The lorikeets say Hi :) Happy October and Happy Sunday. xx

  3. The Lorikeets in the gumtree are such fun to look at, we only can watch these colourful birds in aviaries. You have them in the wild, gorgeous. It must have been fun to go with Little Aussie to discover the Dinosaurs in the museum, my Little Dutchies love these kind of excursions too. Like you I´m always exhausted when they have been staying with us.
    Have a nice weekend!

    1. Ah, another Grannie who knows how tiring the little ones can be, but so special to have time with them. I liked the dinosaur show too. We regard the lorikeets as our 'pets' although they are wild, as they come every morning. I have seen them in overseas zoos and find it quite upsetting to see them restrained. Happy weekend to you too!

  4. I do hope that you are feeling better and that spring will bring better things your way health wise. A lovely place to take your Dad out for a drive! Love your runner, a great idea and as you say, can always be changed into something else! Makes it even better!! Hugs to you! xx

    1. Thank you Amy, will do my best to get on top of the health stuff. I love the runner - you can make one too :) Just buy the doilies at a thrift shop and off you go. Hugs to you too xx

  5. Those mountains look so inviting Patricia your father must love his outings with you.
All little children seem to be fascinated by dinosaurs, and I am sure that is why our eldest son eventually became a Geologist.
Grandchildren are tiring I suppose because we are older ourselves. We had our grandson staying for 3 weeks, and although he was no bother at all we were both quite tired by the end of it.

    1. The mountain is very high and dramatic. My brothers have climbed it a few times, and every year a few climbers, unfortunately, have to be rescued! It seems to be very attractive to adventurers. So much more seems to be known about dinosaurs now, and it really does appeal to children. I must confess I knew little, and cared less, when I was that age - fairies and whether or not they were real was my interest :)
Aussie was really good all day, for 10 hours, with no drama at all, and yet we were exhausted! As you say, it is the age thing. I hope we can make the most of it until he out-grows us.

  6. That first photo is simply amazing!! What gorgeous scenery, and the storm for a backdrop is so dramatic. I hope your grandson calmed your fears about the dinos! You certainly had a full day with him. Love that doily table runner ... great idea! Enjoy your weekend Patricia!

    1. Thank you Wendy, I love that view which is of course so much better in real life. We managed to avoid being caught in the storm, just by good luck. Back at the care facility they had the hail while we were out driving. Little man was not at all afraid of the dinos, and went racing round from one to the other. Happy weekend!

  7. Tricia, I love your dollies! Also, I would enjoy Dinosaur Discovery at the Queensland Museum. The truth, did you take Little Aussie, or did he take his grandparents. ;) Lovely, lovely countryside. We really must take great care of Mother Earth!

    1. Everyone likes the doilies! Just find some in a thrift shop, and stitch together in a few places, and Voila! You can do it too :) We can start a trend. Ah the truth is out - Aussie took us, in fact he suggested it. Who were we to resist? All part of the fun.
Mother Earth is dramatically present in that area, which is away from civilisation and part of a national park. Definitely worth preserving.

  8. I'm glad you are feeling better and that you are out and about again. I'm not surprised you were exhausted after a day with the little one.

The storm clouds are impressive - we get them like that too - only I don't like what comes from them. Hail is not fun, hope you and the car were under cover. I love the use of the doilies - keeping your options open :)

    1. It did come as a surprise how tiring it was with Aussie, because we usually only have him when his father or uncle is here too, and this time it was just us! But we survived it, twice, over the holidays and he seemed to really like being with us, and behaved beautifully.
No we did not get hailed upon Sarah, we managed by good luck to avoid it. Meantime back at the care facility the hail came while we were out, so all good. Collect some doilies - you can do it too :)

  9. I love that mountain area, which is about 90 minutes from where we live. There is a lot of driving in the days we take Dad out, but we go to places we enjoy as well. We are doing our best to build happy memories in our little man - I want him to think well of us, and to know we are always here as a safe haven.

  10. Wonderful views of the stormy mountains. We have been awoken every morning by the breakfasting lorikeets in our Honey Gem grevillea. I do love them though. Great holiday outing with Nana. I adore your runner xx

    1. Lorikeets are apparently addictive, Michelle. Ours are feeding fat babies these days, such fun to watch. You too can make a runner - it will be the Red Cardinal blog fashion :) xx

    1. Janice!! So nice to see your voice :) Hope you are well, and I know you have seen some of our Aussie scenery - this mountain is particularly striking to see. You can make your Red Cardinal doily runner with lace found in France - all those lovely markets :))

  12. Love seeing your photos of Australia. I have such a tourist view of Australia, thinking of Ayres Rock, Sydney Harbour Bridge & anyhting I saw on Neighbours as a student. Thanks for putting me right.

    1. Hello Katharine, Funny thing about tourist views, isn't it...and there are always lots of other things the tourists are never told about. Our mountain is popular with climbers and bush walkers, but rather 'off the beaten track' as we say. I have never been to Ayers Rock (Uluru) - hopefully some day. It is a long way to the red centre of our country!

  13. Beautiful mountain scenery Patricia.
We've had such an unusual Spring here - wet and cold with no sign of roses blooming just a couple of measly buds!
I'm not surprised you slept so long after little Ozzie's visit - they have boundless energy I know!
Beautiful doilies and what a lovely idea to make a table runner.
Take care and don't overdo it dear friend.
    Much love

    1. Happy Sunday Shane, what no roses in Auckland? A travesty :) I hope your beautiful rose gardens come good very soon. Trying not to overdo it, which seems to be an occupational hazard of grandparenting. Off to do grown-up things this week. Love and hugs xox

  14. Sounds like a busy time. I like the mountain storm pictures. I also like the clever way you used lots of small doilies to create a runner. I know Little Aussie must have enjoyed his time with you and the museum.

  15. What magnificent scenery you have there, Patricia. It reminds me of my beloved SA. It's a shame about the blossom, but the Lorikeets are very pretty aren't they? I can imagine you were very tired after little Aussie's visit. Small things can be tiring even when you are well! The runner is beautiful. What a great idea!

  16. You can reuse them by linking them into a nice curtain. It looks like snow raining when you hang it on the window.
