SYDNEY DAY 1

We've been to Sydney - Australia's largest metropolis, spread across and about that magnificent harbour and a string of perfect beaches...

Twas a birthday trip for Mr C, catching up with our Sydneysider Son...

We did boy-things....

The Australian National Maritime Museum..

History of whaling...

Photos and souvenirs from the visit to Sydney, in 1908, of The Great White Fleet, a fleet of 16 American battleships on a goodwill cruise of the world.

and an exhibition:
Ansel Adams: Photography from the Mountains to the Sea

Ansel Adams, 1902-1984 - Google Images

Water was one of Adams favourite subjects.  He photographed it in waterfalls, rivers and rapids, ice and snow.  Born in San Francisco, he photographed the Pacific coast, and later his beloved Yosemite Valley.

Beautiful silver gelatin prints.
I love them.

All Ansel Adams pictures from Google Images.

In our dusty and old, yet preferred Antiques & Collectibles market, I spotted this:

Fifty years this month, since the world was shocked by the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and it seemed to change us in a similar way to 9/11.

The collective memory never forgets, and no doubt we will watch a few commemorative documentaries over the next few weeks.
It was a short, but golden, 1,000 days...

Hope your week is peaceful and lovely

    1. That would be fun, Darla! I'm sure you are familiar with Ansel Admas, he being from your general area, but he was new to me. Very nice indeed!

  2. That looks like a splendid trip Patricia and loved hearing about Ansel Adams. Gosh I can't believe it is fifty years since J F Kennedy was assassinated. I know exactly where I was and what I was doing at the time! Have a great week.

    1. The fifty years is a bit shocking, isn't it? I have tiny, scattered memories of it, mainly the feeling of a changed world. The Adams photos were nostalgic, and really beautiful.

  3. Patricia,
What a nice visit you had in Sydney. I've always wanted to go to Australia. Jess went a few years ago and had a wonderful time. The info. you had on Ansel Adams was so interesting to me, as I love Photography. He has taken some amazing pictures. I especially love the snow-capped mountains. I'm so glad you got to spend time with your son. Spending time with family is special.

Have a blessed week, my friend.

    Love,

    1. Dear Sheri, Sydney is always fun for a weekend - we tend to go a few times each year. You would have loved the Adams pictures - he would spend a whole day taking shots of moving water, and got spectacular results. Yes, family is very special. Blessings, P.

    1. Thank you Sulky, Great quote there: "Never met a museum I didn't like"! I think I am the same - some people I know spend their travel time in pubs, but not me - I'm out there checking on their heritage :)

  5. Ah, I love Sydney. We went back in 2003 and it was so fun. I'm glad we went at least once. Sadly, it's so far away that I'll bet we don't make it back that way again, so it was truly once in a lifetime!

    1. I am glad you have enjoyed the delights of Sydney. When our daughter lived there I went down every 3 months, and really loved her area. Many wonderful places in the world, and many we only see once as well!

  7. Looks like you had a great time. I'm interested in the Kennedy rug. I still have quite a large collection of Kennedy memorabilia, from a previous time in my life when I was fascinated by the Kennedys. ( The collection is packed up in a suitcase in our cellar in France ! ) I used to have a rug just like that. I sold it years ago for about $100 ( US.) I'd be interested to know how much it would be worth now....possibly lots more, with the 50th anniversary coming up, but also possibly much less, as I think the bottom fell out of the collectibles market over here ( UK) when he recession hit Europe. People don't really need JFK rugs ! fascinating though. Jx

    1. I thought it fascinating too Janice, as I had never seen such a thing in Australia. The rug actually has two faces on it, the other being Robert Kennedy. I just arranged it this way and showed JFK because of the 50 anniversary. Curiosity made me look at the price, I think it was around $90. How interesting that you have a collection of Kennedy memorabilia - perhaps you could show some on your blog this month? My only piece is a pencil with Jackie in her pink suit on it, bought at the Texas Book Depository...

  8. Love Ansel Adams photographs. Sounds as you had a wonderful trip. Always nice to be out and about! If I don't learn something on a trip I feel it was all a waste!

  9. You've given me such a good idea of Sydney, Patricia, one of the places my father loved when he lived in Australasia in his 20s. I too can remember exactly how I heard the news about JFK's assassination. My mother interrupted my sister and me as we were doing our homework to tell us, and next day almost everyone I overheard in town was talking about it.
