POPPY DAY

I'm off to Sydney again this week - here's a picture I took in 2007 -
and by the way,
the Sydney Opera House celebrated its 50th anniversary the other day...

It's so exciting, as apart from family business, I am going to my first Blog Meeting -
(not sure of the correct terminology here)
I will be meeting with Valerie, of Valerie's Own Sewing Blog
one of the most interesting and helpful sewing blogs around.

Details can be found on Val's blog, and if you are a Sydney sewist, and interested in joining our tour of a couple of Sydney's best fabric stores, followed by lunch at Oxford Square, you are welcome to join us.

Essential questions are being considered:
What does one wear for such a special occasion?
Will we find each other?
How much money can I spend on fabric? (probably too much)

Ye olde Janome overlocker...

My new Bernina, with whom I am slowly getting acquainted.

There has been very little rain this year, and the garden has struggled through Spring...

Storms are forecast, but rarely eventuate, and general indications are for a hotter and drier Summer than we have had since the great drought of 2006/2007.

Does anybody else think Kate is looking a little too thin already?
Here she is back on duty, meeting Poppy Day supporters at Kensington Palace this week, in her beautiful red L.K. Bennett 'Ami' coat.
Three poppies this year...

I love the poppy brooches, a perfect way to support the memory of those who served their country.  Remembrance Day, 11th November, marks the end of World War 1 in 1918, when the armistice took effect from the '11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th Month'.

Lest we Forget.

  2. Have fun at your meet-up! I think you should take advantage of your time to enhance your fabric stash. You don't want to get home and regret not having purchased a fabric you really like! :-)

    1. Thank you Kristie - nothing worse than flying home saying 'I should have gotten that ....' Hopefully at least one nice piece will make it back to the nest.

  3. Blog meet-ups are great fun, Patricia, and it really doesn't matter what you wear. Just being there with someone with which you have a lot in common is what really matters. You'll have a wonderful time, but domn't break the bank in the fabric shops. :-)

As for Kate, if she's still feeding young George herself she will be thin. I was at my thinnest ever when I was feeding our two.

    1. I am really looking forward to this experience, as I have enjoyed the friendships found in the world of blogging. And I'm sure it will be quite wonderful, even if I don't buy a single thing! If Kate is still feeding young George, I am very impressed with her as I don't think that happened in previous royal generations. He is certainly a bonny baby.

    2. Thank you Shane, I am so looking forward to the meet up, my very first one in blogland. There are several old sewing machines around my house; I think they are much prettier than the modern ones. Hugs, P. xxx

  5. Do it Valerie - I want to see the eccentric pink and bone elephants!!!
I am thinking feet first, probably will need walking shoes like Mary Janes, and will dress accordingly!
Dear Kate - yes, she does look new mum tired, bless her.

  6. Patricia,
Look at that purple flower, it's gorgeous! How fun for you to meet one of your blog friends. I hope you have a delightful time chatting about many things. The sewing machines made me smile and remembering my Mom, as she sewed all my clothes growing up. She even sewed my wedding dress. She was a fantastic seamstress.

Have a nice week ahead, and enjoy your visit with your friend.

    Love,
    ~Sheri

    1. Thank you Sheri, I love the purple flowers too. Your mother sounds like a wonderful seamstress, as so many women were back in the day. Home sewing is something of a lost art today and I am looking forward to my meeting with another sewing blogger! xxx

  8. Is that your old Singer? Wow, and I imagine it still works perfectly. It will be such fun going to a Blogger meet-up. We'll be expecting a full report! Have fun.

    1. Must confess these photos of old Singers are from the internet, Sanda. However I do have one of these, not quite as pretty as the last one, but nearly, although it does not work now; purely ornamental! Try and stop me doing a full report :)

    2. Happy poppy day, Patricia!

It is ironic that when you're rich and famous and have access to the best food in the world, you end up not eating enough ... watching your weight all the time. Not that I believe people should overeat, but I do wonder why the standard of beauty bar is stick thin in the public eye.

    3. Ironic but so true, Debra. You bring up a couple of good points: the standard of beauty has become unhealthily thin, while the food industry produces far too much 'quick food' which is overloaded with bad fats, carbs and chemicals, all contributing to obesity. World gone mad!

  9. How fun to go to a gathering with other sewers (seamstresses?)! That's my new excitement so all things around sewing make me excited. I will have to visit Valerie's blog!

  10. Have fun in Sydney In Patricia. I love the old sewing machine and I have a lovely old sewing table in my hall which was my husband's grandmothers. I just love old treasured wares too. Happy Weekend Shell - A Darlings Nest xox

  11. Bet you'll enjoy that new serger. Although with your 3 thread one, it was lots easier to rip out wrong seams.
Sydney fabric shopping sounds like such fun. My husband is back there right now, but I decided only to go back with him every other time, or I could be tagging along.
