THE WEARING OF THE GREEN

My given name is Patricia, and I was educated by Irish nuns ...
so of course St Patrick's Day was quite the festive occasion in my youth.

Each year I sang in the local St Patrick's Day concert -
the Irish/Australians like a celebration here, just as in the Old Country.

My mother bought me these treasures on a visit to Ireland 30 years ago ..

and I found this shamrock cookie cutter in Ottawa in 2010.

Made shamrocks today

Some people think green is unlucky,

but not me; I love it!

I'm wearing this emerald green top, recently found in a Mall about town.

St Patrick, patron saint of Ireland.

and here's an Irish Blessing for you.

Whether you have a glass or two of Guinness, an Irish coffee, dance a jig or sing the old ballads...

A very Happy St Patrick's Day to ye all!

  1. A very Happy St. Patrick's Day to you. Love all your Irish/green memorabilia. The Irish are the kindest, sweetest people and I love their happy, carefree attitude. I was fortunate to visit the Green Isle in the 1980s, and fell in love with it. It is my hope to go back once again. Forty shades of green is the truest description of that beautiful land.

    1. Forty shades of green - love it! I'm hoping to visit Ireland one day, and my son's partner is Irish and they do have a lovely sweet attitude.

  3. My husband's father's parents were right off the boat from Ireland, but I already loved St. Patrick's Day. Corned beef always, and it was the one day I relaxed my aversion to food coloring and tinted the kids milk a light green. I bought my daughter, who has Irish hair, a Claddagh ring for her graduation. Oh yeah, I love St. Patrick's Day! (Just learned that pigs should be included in the celebration. Who knew?)

    1. Hi Beryl, sounds like you have St Patrick's day all sorted! I didn't know about the corned beef, but it is one day to break out the green food colouring. Mr C and I both have Irish ancestry, off the boats in the 1800s. Off to take Dad out for some Irish cheer now.

    1. Hi Patricia and welcome to my blog. I find it strange that some Irish people think green unlucky. My late mother in law was one. But the bad luck apparently was suspended on St Patrick's Day! Happy St Pat's Day to you too.

  5. Happy St Patrick's day! Although I'm Irish, green is considered a very unlucky colour in my family so St Patrick's Day was the only day we could wear it without worrying that the sky would fall in. That green top is beautiful and I love the cookies.

    1. Happy St Patrick's day Sulky. Maybe you can enlighten us as to why the green was unlucky? I don't care, I am right into the green. Will have to give away most of the cookies though, they are without Any Nutritional Benefit whatsoever! xx

  6. Happy St Patrick´s Day !
I like certain greens. It is so suitable for horse rugs too, and all my stable clothes are some shade of green.
I went to school over here run by Catholic nuns, but remained Lutheran.
I must admit, that the idea of revealing one´s " sins " and being forgiven, would have felt tempting at times.

    1. Thanks Mette, and Happy St Pat's day to you (and the horses too). I hope they are wearing their green rugs today. The Catholic nuns pop up all over the world; very dedicated teachers they were. Being forgiven is key for the Irish - we are all wicked, he he ...

  9. Dear Patricia - have a lovely day, and enjoy those wonderful looking cookies.
I remember when I was at a Convent School for a short while, and a cardboard box used to arrive from Ireland filled with freshly picked lucky clover leaves for everyone to wear.
It is not celebrated in the Britain apart from in the Irish communities.

    1. Thank you rosemary, I gave Dad most of the cookies, which he loves.
Imagine a box arriving with fresh shamrocks - in Australia they would be Dead On Arrival!
The funny thing with Australia, it is a very secular country, but there were many St Patrick's parades, green beer in pubs, and so on, over the weekend.

  10. Happy Saint Patrick's Day to you too, Patricia. Those biscuits look delicious and I love the colour of your top. My mother wasn't Irish, but she would never wear green because it was an unlucky colour to her.

  14. A belated St. Patrick's Day, Patricia! To celebrate I shared an Irish soda recipe I often make because I love buttermilk biscuts, but am too lazy to make them. The soda bread satisfies the craving, but is alot easier to prepare. I believe it's healthier too.
