BACK AT LAST

Hello from the Red Cardinal nest.  I hope you all are well.

I know, it has been a long break from blogging.

We had the most marvelous trip to Europe in April for the Easter Music Festivals in Salzburg, Munich and Baden Baden.

Our flight from Brisbane to Dubai, over 14 hours, went very smoothly and I managed to sleep for seven hours.

I then watched the film Conclave, not knowing that in a few weeks a new conclave would be held in Rome, and a new Pope would be appointed.

We spent 24 hours in Dubai to rest and re-set our body clocks.  Our hotel overlooked the famous Dubai Creek where we watched busy little Arab boats come and go.

Palm trees decorated the foyer...

Then it was off to Europe, a much shorter six hour flight to Munich.

It was a great relief to see our pre-arranged driver waiting, with a sign just for us.  We then enjoyed a very comfortable two-hour drive to Salzburg.  The autobahn followed the Alps all the way, the first time we have seen them.  Bright green meadows lined the road, then the snow-capped Alps reared straight up behind the cute little farms.

I loved Salzburg.  Our hotel was situated on the main shopping street, and faced the river at the back.  It was a very historic building, with quaint little inner courtyards, unexpected staircases and large rooms, and it was very comfortable.

A few yards away was a house where Schubert lived...

and a little further, Mozart's childhood home.

Of course, we had to take the horse-and-carriage City Tour..

Mozart: Salzburg's most famous son...

Up on the fort overlooking the city which appears many times in the background of the movie 'The Sound of Music'..

After two days exploring, we were joined by the other members of our Music Tour group, and we enjoyed a welcome dinner at the hotel.  We were a small group of 15 music lovers from Australia, with a tour leader and manager.

Day tours included visiting Mozart's house where we inspected the fascinating original manuscripts of hundreds of his compositions including from childhood.  We also saw his piano and violin, and other memorabilia.

And then it was time for the concerts to begin:

Here I am in the late afternoon arriving at the Grosses Festspielhaus for our first Opera: Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina.

I have some other news to tell.

On return from our journey, we have decided to sell our Red Cardinal nest.

Our lovely home has become too difficult for us to look after in our advancing years, and we are looking for another house, closer to amenities and services, on one level and with a much smaller garden.

It will be sad, but we know the time is right.

I have been extremely busy turning out my cupboards, looking at other properties, and generally getting ready to sell.  We will have a big garage sale in a few weeks and will keep only what is necessary and important in our lives, and what brings us joy.

I will try to get around to your blogs whenever I get a little rest time.

Keep well and enjoy the season.

  1. I was thinking of reviewing the film Conclave in my blog. What did you think of the film?

    1. I thought it was (mostly) very good. Ralph Fiennes played a very good part, and it did give us an idea of how a conclave is organised and can play out. There were a few ideas there that seemed to play to the 'woke' aesthetic, but that is today's world.

  3. Hello my dear Trish!
I'm so happy you're back safe and sound. It's so fun to read about your trip and brings me down memory lane of my time in Salzburg over 25 years ago!! You looked so chic in those photos too. And wow about your home! I can only imagine all you're trying to tackle right now...but makes complete sense for this stage of your life. Prayers for a nice smooth process ahead with it all. Welcome back to Blogland - you were missed. :) Blessings to you 💗

    1. Hello dear Carrie, I love that you saw Salzburg back then. It really is magical, like being dropped into Fairyland! You are right, much to tackle on the home front, but better now than when we are even older. All prayers gratefully appreciated. Finding the new place is not proving easy but we are working on it. Blessings back to you. xxx

  4. Oh bless you! Wish you could buy a new home right next door to me! What a wonderful trip you must have had, I hope you will show us LOTS more photos! I am so envious, I have wanted to see Austria since I was 8 years old and the movie theater showed us those scenes from "The Sound of Music". Guess what, we see Red Cardinals every day and we love them, but this morning we saw a Summer Tanager, another bright red bird. Look for it on my blog post!!!

    1. Well that would be a good idea Kay! Right near you, good neighbour guaranteed, and a comparatively short flight to Ottawa to visit the young red cardinals.... I mean, the daughter and her kids. While we did not go on the all-day Sound of Music tour, we saw many of the sites in Salzburg and last week replayed the movie with 'new eyes'. I just looked up the Summer Tanager and it sure is red too, and I would mistake it for a red cardinal any day.

  5. How lovely to read of your trip to Europe. I visited Salzburg with my mother and sister a few years ago and recognize the street you are standing in along with Mozart's house.
Best wishes as you plan for moving house and settling into a new home. It's a huge task. I hope you soon find the perfect place.

    1. Hi Lorrie, it's good to hear you have also visited Salzburg. It is a very special city. Thank you for your good wishes. I find I don't mind so much the clearing out of that which is superfluous, but I do not like the negotiations with real estate and financial people! Let us hope the perfect place comes along soon.

Good luck selling your house and finding your new forever home. It is an exciting time for y'all to dream big even if the new house is smaller.

  7. Glad to hear you had a wonderful trip, Patricia. The horse and carriage ride sounds fun. I took one many years ago in Sacramento. I like your black outfit. It looks very stylish on you. You're selling your home? That must have been a very hard decision to make. A single story home with a small garden sounds just right for you. I wish you well on your sorting, organizing, and giving away things. It will be a process for sure, but I know you'll get through it, and feel lighter and joyful after it's finished.

    1. A hard decision, but a necessary one Sheri. Our block on a hillside is too difficult for the elderly people we have mysteriously become. I do feel happier when shedding the surplus in each cupboard as I work my way around. Sacramento sounds nice, I will go have a look at it on Google.

  8. Many years ago, Trish, I went to Cairo, but have never to any other Arab country, and I have not been to Austria. I have always wanted to go to Vienna likely because of my desire so enjoy the British series, Vienna Blood! Oh, how I envy your European trip, Trish! Happy to hear it went so well!

Welcome back to the blogging world!

    2. Hi Debra. That is exciting to have been to Cairo - nobody ever seems to go to Egypt these days. Vienna is gorgeous; we saw it in 2018 and I would love to return there. Our trip went incredibly well, for which we were really grateful, and I would like to share more of it when I get a chance. It's really hectic around here atm. Its good to be back on the blog.

  9. It’s lovely to see you back,, Trish. What a wonderful time you had in Austria! I’m sorry to hear you are selling your lovely home, but it makes sense for many reasons. Good luck with all the decluttering and downscaling! I hope you’ll still have time for a blog post or two!

    1. Hi Val, I hope to find time to post more about our trip. The downscaling is taking a lot of time, but we are managing it well so far. I am aiming at a garage sale in about 4 weeks.

  11. What a remarkable blog post!! Where to begin to comment! First off I am in awe of your traveling gusto! How was Dubai? It always has intrigued me so! Salzburg sounds like a music lovers dream!

It must be bittersweet to sell your home. I was just telling Jeff this week that I am so glad we always stayed with our small home. It was definitely tight when the kids were teenagers, but I can't imagine having to upkeep anything larger.

I so admire your zest for life my dear! From far off foreign travels, to picking up for a new home!

All the very best my dear from Southern California!

    XOXO

    1. Dear Tamera, thank you for your lovely comment. Dubai is very intriguing, and incredibly hot! The World's Tallest Building dominates the skyline (but we have never ascended it on numerous visits). The Islamic architecture is beautifully decorative, and I always enjoy that too. It is indeed bittersweet to need to sell our beautiful home. I do wonder how I will deal with the feelings involved. We need something about the size of yours, I think. It will be lovely to be settled and perhaps go off on another journey (to Canada) in 2026. P. xoxo
