RAIN, A VISIT AND STRANGE TIMES

Hello
See the raindrops, dancing on the pool?

It's been raining again, and the garden is loving it..

When it is not raining, it is freezing cold.
Good.

Time for new scarves..

and new boots..

and break out my warm Mondrian dress, c 2013.

Little Aussie and his Dad came to visit for a few days over the school holidays..

We made sausage rolls..

and played Mousetrap..

No, I'm not sure if that was Darth Vader either...

Lego still rules.

I liked this dress Kate wore for the Battle of the Somme commemoration.
Subtle mourning, beautiful beige lace over black.
Elegant.

Shirley Macnamara, Qld. b. 1949 'Skullcap' 2013

I thought you might like to see this art installation, part of the Exhibition 'Line and Form : Paintings and Sculpture from the Indigenous Australian Collection',
currently on show at GoMA.

In 'Skullcap' Queensland artist Shirley Macnamara recalls customary funerary practices for some Indigenous women, where heads were plastered with white clay or gypsum to form a cap.  This was worn for some time after a bereavement, successive coatings being added making it very heavy and uncomfortable.

Macnamara does not copy the caps found in museum collections, rather she adds emu feathers to her red ochre form, recalling the emu-plumed hats of Australian soldiers in the two World Wars.  In particular, she wishes to ensure the Aboriginal soldiers who went to war and never returned to their loved ones, are no longer forgotten.

We had a Federal election in Australia last weekend.
So close was it, that we still have no result, and no Prime Minister.
We live in strange times.

Be good.

  1. Welcome to the club - no Prime Minister - I think the world may be going into free fall.
Love your boots, they look just like I am needing - soft and comfortable.
I could eat some of your sausage rolls now, they look very tasty indeed.

    1. Free fall it is, Rosemary. We have had four PMs in a few short years, far from the stability we would all like. I hope you find some soft boots: comfort is key :)

  2. That dress of Kate's is really beautiful. As for feeling strange, I don't think you can feel as strange as we do in England at the moment :/

    1. Indeed it is strange in England now. Your blog post is very enlightening indeed, much more than the snatches we see on the evening news. I too wonder what will happen next. Let's concentrate on beautiful lace dresses.

  3. Love those new boots!
Kate's dress is really lovely and she is such a gracious and gorgeous representative for England...with the recent exit from the EU I wonder what changes will be made...it will be interesting to watch.

    1. Thank you from my new booties, Hostess. Kate has had some super outfits lately, really fitting into the royal life beautifully. So interesting re England, and I hope they are a bit settled when we arrive in London (soonish)

  4. I think even when we know who the prime minister is for the next few years, effectively we will not have one, much like the last nine years. Immerse in art and dressmaking, I think, while the world proceeds down it's strange path.

    1. So true Sarah Liz: so many PMs in so little time, it is very disheartening. Remember when nine years was a reasonable length of time for one person to hold the job. Immersion in the arts is definitely a good idea.

  6. We are in strange times here too, leader after leader either resigning or being chased out! I think that Lego could rule the world in a far better way!

    1. Isn't is peculiar, we have no leader yet, and over there they are leaving apace. Not to mention the trump factor in the USA! May the force be with us....

  7. Trish, I can always come here for the pretties: flowers, dresses, scarves and boots -- all lovely! I just got into wearing scraves a few years ago - as I discovered silk and cotton scarves keep you warm before you break out the wool ones, and a scarf can pull together an outfit with a pop of color.

So the politics hasn't just gotten strange in the US? It's all over the world, eh.

    1. Always did love the pretties, Debra. I was a funny little girl who liked all my mother's accessories :)
Silk scarves are lovely, and I enjoy them when the summer heat subsides. Yes, strange politics all over these days. Where will it all end?
