COLOURFUL TIMES

Happy Monday, people.
In my last post I forgot to show my Catherine the Great tee, from The Hermitage exhibition in Melbourne.
Catherine looks very imperial, doesn't she...

Meantime, this kookaburra appeared in our tree, shortly after we found a small dead snake lying on the ground beneath.
It was a white-crowned snake, one of the lesser venomous ones.
Could there be a connection?  Well, kookaburras do eat snakes...

I really don't like the fact that snakes are emerging in August, which should be the middle of winter.  That is hibernation time, snakes...

V and I went to see Iris, the movie about Iris Apfel, legendary New Yorker and fashion icon, who just turned 94.
We loved it to bits.  Iris is an inspiration - so colourful and original.
She has collected clothes from around the world, in markets, China town, anywhere interesting.

Her quotes are very clever, and often hilarious.

Afterwards we went shopping at the nearest boutique.

This pencil skirt was a perfect fit, and found its way home with me.
Behold the Brooklyn Bridge on the front...

and I think that is part of the Empire State Building on the back.
Please let me know, Debra of New York..

I came home and gathered together my life-long collection of mostly worthless beads to put on display.  If you keep something long enough, it's time will eventually return..

Our king orchid has flowered again, with three fronds this year.
This orchid came from my father's home, when he moved into care in 2012.  We cut the orchid in pieces and shared it around the family.
It produced one bloom in 2013, two in 2014, and three in 2015.
Does this mean that orchids can count?

Have a happy week everybody.

  1. There certainly is much to be admired about Iris. Yes, I would absolutely have loved to have seen her exhibition - it must have been amazing. It made her famous!

  2. A lovely colourful post. LOVE that tee shirt! I always admire people who can put together amazing looks from charity shops and odd spots. So much of looking great is how you combine clothes, isn't it. How I wish I had learned how to do that, but I suspect it's something that comes naturally.
I like to have my beads on display too. Mind you they can get a bit dusty after a while.... :)

    1. Ah, yes, didn't think of the dusting. I'll need to watch that..
Yes, it is the putting together of the looks that made Iris so interesting to see. Underneath all the accessories, most of her clothes were elegant classics. I'm trying to figure out how to do justice to Catherine!

  4. Trish, a quite lovely post this morning. Catherine really does look regal, and she had quite a life! The beads are so colorful; I tend to be a bit conservative. But I really do like your new skirt! You will get lots of looks and comments.

    1. Thank you Linda Kay. New skirt has had one successful excursion, and yes, lots of comments and interest shown :)

  5. Iris has fantastic style but so do you too - fantastic T-shirt and really unusual skirt.
I wonder if we could all get away with the eclectic looks that Iris achieves, she is like an artist using herself as the prop.

    1. Thank you Rosemary, I'm taking the skirt off to the Art Gallery today - it seems only fair..
One of my art lecturers at university used to say women make art with what they have around them, and Iris certainly seems to fit into that. There is a lot of thought going into what she does.
Such outfits would probably frighten the horses in my conservative location!

  6. Hey Tricia! Sounds like a fun day!

I've never seen a kookaburra, but should I ever, I will also check for snakes ... not kidding. :)

I am not absolutely sure if the shirt shows The Empire State Building, or not. It sits on 5th Avenue at W. 34 Street and is not surrounded by water or highway. The area is part of the midtown section of Manhattan, whereas the image on the skirt looks more like lower Manhattan, which does have water, bridges and tall building too. Here is a so-so photo I once took of lower Manhattan (taken with an iphone 4). You can see that it is built up and concreted like so much of the city: http://thesavvvyshopper.blogspot.com/2013/07/new-york-city-on-saturday-night.html. The ESB isn't visable from that point, as far as I know.

Cool skirt! Definitely captures New York. I bet at one time The Empire State Building could be clearly seen from lower Manhattan.

    1. Thank you Debra, your photo does show the viewpoint on my skirt! I wonder if they used a vintage photo to make the print - that might explain it. The skirt is a hit, lots of fun to wear. It is going out today with my red jacket from Florence, should be a good combination.

  7. I like your new skirt most, then the T. Good purchases.
August = winter. I just can´t " get " it. Whatever the month of the year, there are always flowers! And so colorful.
I should see the film too, as I have only seen pictures of Iris. Not liking them. Sorry if I hurt someones feelings ( :

    1. I love my new skirt Mette, because it actually feels very elegant, worn with a black top and a choker of wooden beads painted silver.
Yes, we do have flowers through most of the year, but they vary from the temperate to the tropical. It is an environment of colour.
Iris is a great personality, but her look probably only suits New York, or a very bohemian area. It did not escape my attention in the film that under the piles of beads, she has beautiful, classic couture suits and dresses. I wanted them too... Definitely no feelings hurt ;)

  8. I am sure it means that your orchid can count! Just think how many blooms there will be in years to come if that is the case! I love the way you have all of your necklaces gathered together and displayed like that!! xx

    1. I have been thinking exactly that, Amy. When the orchid was at Dad's place, it used to have very large numbers of fronds each year, and was a glorious sight. Hoping we live here long enough to see that happen once again. Might wear a necklace today... xx

  9. Patricia, what a cool t-shirt you bought. The kookaburra bird looks exotic, and looks like he has a white head of feathers? What a delightful quote by Iris Apfel. And you have quite a collection there of beads and necklaces. That's so true about keeping something for so long, and eventually it will come back in style. There has been many a time when I wish I had kept some of my clothes.

    Have a nice week, Patricia.

    love, ~Sheri

    1. Yes Sheri, the kookaburra has white feathers on the head. They are different from our other birds, with large heads, and they catch small animals for food. I too often think of clothes from the past which I would love to wear again today. Too often we think we should 'de-clutter'. I have started to be more careful what goes, and have started a storage cupboard in the garage for out-of-fashion but good outfits. Off to choose a necklace now :) xo

  10. What an interesting and unusual skirt. I'm sure when you wear it you will get lots of compliments. Didn't know there was a movie about Iris Apfel. She must have had an interesting life with lots of travels.

    1. I wore the skirt last week, and it certainly generated some attention. Not everybody in Australia would recognise the scenes, but I am there to advise, a walking geography lesson! Iris is a documentary film, made last year. Sadly, her husband who charms us throughout, passed away a couple of months ago aged 100. She was an interior designer, and I think they travelled a lot.

  11. What an inspiration Iris was and is! No wonder you went shopping afterwards 😊 And what a great age she is! Fantastic. Love the Tee shirt! And yes, watch out for those snakes. As always, I love the eclectic nature of your posts x

  12. Going shopping was the least we could do. Iris is amazing for 94, no dementia there. If wearing lots of colour is the secret, I'm in! (Beats crosswords, which I find boring). Being eclectic amuses me Val, although I could have done a better segue there. The kookaburra looks very imperial too :)

  13. You know how I am about those snakes, Patricia. You amaze me with how calm you sound about finding the dead snake in your yard. As if being a "lesser venomous one" makes it no big deal. :-)

    1. As long as they are not deadly, I guess we don't worry too much about the little snakes. However, I always wear shoes outside, no matter how hot it is, just to be careful. I also have an inbuilt habit of scanning the ground at all times, which is how I saw the little snake on the edge of a garden bed. BUT I have to say, I do hate snakes, and would be happy for them all to vanish off the earth!!
