TROPICAL CYCLONE MARCIA

It will be a day of drama here in Queensland today.
A few minutes ago,  Category 5 Cyclone Marcia crossed the coast around Yeppoon and Rockhampton, on the Tropic of Capricorn, 500 km north of Brisbane.

Fingers crossed, and thoughts and prayers for the people of this area, many of whom have already been evacuated from their homes and are in the Cyclone Shelters.

Meantime, Cyclone Lam is bearing down on the Northern Territory, leaving the tip of Queensland in a 'Cyclone Sandwich' with one on either side!

On the edge of the rain action, here in Brisbane it has rained steadily for 24 hours, and local flooding is expected today.

It was windy yesterday but is strangely calm this morning..

Cockatoo sheltering in our gum tree..

It is a strange, eerie time..
I find it difficult to settle, and have the TV on for constant updates.

Michael Sailstorfer [Germany, b.1979] Wolken (Clouds), 2010
Currently on display at QAG, Wolken consists of a multitude of black rubber inner tubes from truck tyres, knotted together and suspended to evoke darkly menacing clouds.
Visitors are engulfed by this ominous force of nature, created from synthetic materials.
Michael Sailstorfer draws on the legacies of Fluxus, Land Art, and the Readymade, combining man-made materials and natural forms.
It seems an appropriate work to show you today.

We are told to stay off the roads, and my Choir Rehearsal has been cancelled.
Just as well..

Meantime, in other distractions, did you see these rubies?

Wow!
Garlands of diamonds and pear-shaped rubies, with matching long earrings, and a bracelet, though to possibly be a gift from Saudi Arabia,
Camilla wore this to a Royal Film Performance of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
After ten years of marriage to the Prince of Wales, Camilla looks chic and comfortable with the trappings of Monarchy...

Everybody out there:
Keep Dry, Don't drive, and Stay Safe.

    1. High winds expected later, but Emergency Services have it all under control at the moment. Might sneak out to take pictures of the flood at the end of our street! :)

  2. Be safe Patricia - the black inner tyre installation is very topical.
I didn't see the rubies but they are certainly on the large side.
Can't wait to see The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel it opens here at the end of the month. I loved the first film.

    1. Thank you Rosemary, the cyclone has done a lot of damage in the Rockhampton area, but thanks to the well-trained Emergency Personnel, people are safe and no reports of loss of life. It is headed south down the inland towards us, but has been downgraded.
I loved the first Marigold movie too. Judy Dench is always a delight, and we have enjoyed the previews of the new movie, which I'd love to see too.

    1. We have a flooded creek in our area, and no doubt there will be more flooding tomorrow Suzy. However all is quiet at the moment, and hopefully the expected winds will not be too bad.
Funny how unsettling it all is, though. xx

  4. I hope that you are all OK and that nothing bad has happened. The calm before the storm is very eyrie indeed isn't it. Take care of yourselves. xx

    1. All is well here, Amy. The cyclone has deteriorated into a gray and miserable day, with a flood across the park where I usually walk.
Lots of people lost homes or roofs at Yeppoon and Rockhampton where it crossed the coast, so the clean up will take some time. xx

  5. When I saw the news this morning about the cyclones I immediately thought of you, Patricia. They were wise to cancel your choir practice. Stay safe!

    1. Thank you for thinking of me, Kristie. We are not going far from home this weekend, while it is still raining quite a lot. Also many roads are flooded. Might not make church tomorrow!

  6. Down under news heard here up too. Terrible, horrible. Not only about conflicts around the world but these dramatic weather changes too.
    Please stay safe!

    1. Yes, another dramatic cyclone for the people in Central Queensland where it crossed the coast, Mette. No lives lost, but many homes battered and roofless. However, Emergency Services have become very skilled now at providing shelters and use social media and TV to their advantage to get the word out. We are fine, and as it travels south, most of the force has gone out of the cyclone.

    1. Yes, I thought the rubies were quite spectacular, Linda :)
Much damage further north (see above), but the main problem in Brisbane in local flooding. We have quite an impressive flooded creek where I usually take my daily walk!

  8. Oh no, I didn't hear about this. I hope this weather doesn't affect your area. That cockatoo is so beautiful - would love to see him around my neck of the woods.

Please be careful of the storm, Patricia. You are in my thoughts today.

    love, ~Sheri

    1. Thank you Sheri, we are fine, and thinking of those people 500km north who lost roofs and homes. However, no lives lost and Emergency Services got everyone to safety in shelters like local schools. Lots of floods, including one at the end of our street which cuts the road. The cockatoo is very pretty, but he looked very sorry for himself yesterday! xx

  9. Your weather sounds ominous and the installation in the museum is perfect for the ocassion.

Hope the flooding at the end of your street goes away and that you are safe inside. Does the temp drop when these storms occur?

    1. The Cloud installation does remind me of the skies we have seen in the past few days. I enjoy including it in my tours, and ask the visitors who likes watching storms. People are divided on this: some (like me) like to watch the skies in action, other hate storms and hide away!
A sunny Sunday today, and the flood has dropped below road level. Lots of workmen are down there cleaning up the debris. I will check it out on my walk in a couple of hours. And yes, the temp did drop to maximums of about 23 for three days. Gone up again now to about 30.

  10. Good luck! natural events like this can be scary. I think you are wise to distract yourself but also listen for updates.

    1. Thank you Jenny, all is well here, but up in Rockhampton about 300 people have houses roofless or destroyed. It will be a long time for that community to get back to normal.
Distraction is key while waiting to see how the event unfolds. By the time the cyclone reached us the wind had gone out of it!

  11. I saw your updates on FB, Patricia, but somehow missed commenting on here. I'm glad the cyclones passed through without loss of life, but the damage is hard for those affected. I loved the first Best Exotic film and am looking forward to the sequel.
