WATTLE

Australia looks forward to a Royal Tour in April this year when
Prince William, Kate, and Baby George arrive..

It's been announced that Kate will wear some of the Queen's fabulous jewels, on loan for the trip, including her famous Australian Wattle Brooch:

It was given to Her Majesty by the Commonwealth of Australia sixty years ago on her first visit to our shores..

The Queen usually wears it with a yellow outfit, and it has made an appearance during most of her royal visits.

Many women are not keen on wearing yellow.  I love it, but I think you need to get just the right shade for your complexion.

Kate has only occasionally been seen in yellow, but the Queen is fearless with colour.

Our wattle blooms in Winter, and has a beautiful scent..

I found some paintings by some well-known Modernist Australian women artists:

Google Images
Drapery and Wattle, 1952, by Grace Cossington-Smith [1892-1984]

Google Images
 Wattle, 1928, Margaret Preston [1875-1963]

and generations of Australian children have grown up enjoying the little bush fairies created by May Gibbs [1877-1969], which include the gorgeous Wattle Babies:

Maybe someone will present Prince George with his own book of Aussie fairytales!

  1. Dear Patricia - May Gibbs Wattle babies are really cute - love those bare little bottoms.
Hope you all enjoy having William, Kate, and baby George on your shores later in the year.

    1. Dear Rosemary, yes the little flower babies are the cutest. We loved them as children.
I'm sure this year's royal visit will be as much fun and excitement as the one when Charles and Diana brought baby William here, at much the same age!

  3. Wattle is a plant I am not familiar with. Perhaps it doesn't grow we'll in my area, as I have never seen it offered for sale. It is beautiful and if scented, would make it extra special. The queen looks stunning in yellow. I have seldom worn yellow because I stick to darker colors. I do have a yellow handbag and scarf however.

    1. The Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) is an Australian native tree, and the nation's Floral Emblem, Sanda. It grows best in temperate regions. A little bit of yellow goes a long way; I also have a yellow bag, sandals, and a scarf (not worn all at once!). It adds a nice accent on darker colours.

  4. I enjoy your posts that introduce me to something new. This time Wattle and those wonderful Wattle fairies. Thanks so much.

I seldom wear yellow but it does seem like a welcome spring like color at the moment.

    1. Hi Darla, I think you could so easily draw those wattle fairies! Yes, yellow is a great spring colour in our hot sunshine.

  5. How much fun to be planning on a visit from Kate and William and George!
Yellow is my favorite color and so I am already familiar with the Wattle Brooch - so lovely in the pictures. Kate picks the perfect yellow and I think if her designers did more of her yellow, she would wear more of it.

    1. I agree, Beryl, Kate picks the perfect yellow for her colouring, and I for one can't wait to see how she works the wattle brooch - day or night? or maybe both?

  6. The Wattle fairies are very cute! You are right about many women not wanting to wear yellow. I am one of the them. I don't think a shade of yellow exists that doesn't make me look like I have hepatitis. :-)

    1. I so loved those little Aussie flower fairies when I was a little girl, Kristie. Oh dear, we don't want you looking like hepatitis, so I guess no yellow for you. Maybe a dark gold?

  7. I didn't know about this brooch of the Queen's so it was very interesting to read about it, and how nice that Kate will be wearing it on her visit too! I am sure that Australia will love to have the Royals visiting again this year! xx

    1. I think it is interesting that the Queen will lend royal jewellery to Kate for her tour. The report also said she would be encouraged to wear tiaras (Yay!) and I wonder what other pieces will come. You can be sure Australia will get right behind the excitement of this royal visit.

  8. Beautiful! The plant life you have in Australia never ceases to amaze me. It's so pretty and so different than what we have in the States.

    1. Australian native plants are very pretty, and tend to have small but attractive blooms. Some are hard to grow in a domestic garden, but golden wattle blooming en masse in the bush is a gorgeous sight.

  9. I have never seen real wattle but it always looks beautiful in photos. I think Kate looks nice in yellow and I hope she will wear it when she visits.

  10. A lovely story about the wattle brooch. It looks magnificent.
I do agree with you Patricia. The Queen looks stunning in any color, she dresses so well. For 85 she is amazing. How wonderful that she is lending the brooch to Kate for their trip. I did not know they were going to visit Australia.
I myself, only ever wore yellow- once in my life. I love the color, but not on me.
    Love the wattle paintings.

    1. The Queen is amazing and looks brilliant in bright colour. Yellow is not for everyone, and I am glad you like the wattle paintings. I like those two artists. xx

  11. Hi, Patricia ! Believe it or not, I think I've never seen wattle and at first, I thought you were talking about mimosa, which we grow in the South of France. But anyway, I love yellow, though I've got very little of it and I'm sure Kate will look a veritable treat on her Australian tour ! xxx

  12. Hi Silver Bunny, I read that Australia's Golden Wattle trees were introduced in Europe in the 1800s, so it is possible that it is the same tree in South of France under another name. I could not verify one way or the other. Glad you love yellow - it seems to have only a few friends! xxx

  14. I remember seeing the famous wattle brooch on a previous Royal visit outfit, Patricia. The Queen is so lucky she can wear yellow, as it really doesn't suit me. I'm sure the Duke and Duchess will have a wonderful time in Australia.

    1. I don't know how the Queen does it, but she seems to be able to wear any colour in existence! The young royal family should have a great time here, and we will have a good time watching it unfold.

  16. Patricia,
I love the little bush fairies! I'm not sure you know this, but I have a thing for fairies, they are so sweet. How exciting that the Royal family will visit Australia soon. I actually love the color yellow in fashion. I don't wear it often, but mostly in the summer months. And yes, you have to get just the right shade for complexion.

The yellow flowers in the first picture are so pretty. Have a good week, dear.

    Love,
    ~Sheri
