MAGIC PLEATS

Behold the Queen of the Night!!

The Red Cardinals have been to see the Australian Opera's production of
Mozart's The Magic Flute.
It was a jolly show, with amazing costumes, giant puppets,
and a huge perspex set.

Bird fanciers that we are, we were quite taken with these costumes:

I don't know about you, but pleats were quite a feature in my earlier days:

There were little pleated skirts like this, made by Mum, and carefully pressed for Sunday Best.

And triple pleated, navy school tunics ...

Later there were more romantic, adult pleats:

Then, somehow, they disappeared from my wardrobe.

Well, they seem to be on the comeback trail.
Look at this lineup of royal ladies, off to the Queen's Jubilee Garden Party,
and all finely pleated!

Another Cute Kate Hat ...

Are you looking forward to next weeks Jubilee fest?
Me too!

xx

  1. The vision of the pleated school tunic has brought back a swag of memories Patricia. I remember I also wore a checked pinafore over the tunic.
The opera production costumes look pretty spectacular.

    1. Hi Annie, the checked pinafore sounds cute. Those were the days ...
Magic Flute certainly was a very spectacular experience, quite different from traditional versions we have previously seen. We were not so sure about the Aussie accents which popped up here and there, tho! xx

  2. How I remember the school tunics mine was green in the winter and green check in summer with a panama hat to boot. Blazer on special occassions. They were wonderful times.
I had a couple of lovely pleated dresses and skirts, very much the fashion. Nice to see them coming back. Now the Royal's are wearing them again, I am sure they will be on the racks soon enough. They all look lovely.
I am very much looking forward to next week..
How wonderful to see "The Magic Flute".. exciting ..
Happy wednesday Patricia and thanks, great photos

    1. Yes, panama school hats, I had quite forgotten those! Good for the Australian sun. I remember some lovely pleated dresses too, when I start to think about it. Everything which goes around comes around, in fashion :)
Next week should be lots of blog material, methinks ... xx

  4. Pleats - when something becomes daggy enough, it tends to come right back into fashion .. ha ha . It is a worry when you remember the last couple of turnarounds ...

  5. Great costumes and staging at the Opera!
I don´t remember well my childhood pleated skirts, but I remember having had pleated skirts later on. Good memories on them.
Kate looks good in her pink outfit!

  6. Hi Mette, The Opera was a visual delight!
Glad you liked the pleat memories, and Kate did look good! She should wear pink more often. xx

  7. I love pleats, though nowadays they don't suit me ! When I was a child, there actually was in my town a shop that was doing only pleats, creating them on material, restoring them, etc.. Mind you, when I was a child, there were also ladies whose job was to invisibly restitch fine stockings.. Gosh, I'm old !! Have a beautiful week-end !xxx

    1. Wow, thanks for the memory Silver Bunny! I remember now, there was a pleating place here too, and the invisible menders - they were amazing. Feeling old too! .. xxx
